Where do you find fabric wide enough to back a quilt? The stuff I see at Jo-Anns and other fabric stores is usually 45" wide, except for the home decor stuff, which isn't suitable for a quilt. I'm looking for something soft and babyish, maybe flannel or minkee.

I usually piece my backings from my leftover fabrics from the quilt top. When I don't have any leftover pieces, then I piece other fabric from my stash. I haven't used a sheet. Most of my quilts are lap-size or smaller, so it has been easy to piece the backing when necessary. (Smaller quilts, like wall-hangings don't need piecing.)

Sheets work wonderfuly. If you want a particular fabric and it isn't available wider than 45", you can still use it. Buy about double or more what the length of the quilt is. Cut in half crosswise and cut one of these pieces in half length wise. Then lay them out so that the widest piece is centered in the middle of the quilt and the two lengths are one on either side of the wide piece. Sew and press the seams to create a large square.
