tips for staying on task?

Help! My DD is nearly 8 and the queen of distraction. She is easily frustrated when she faces a task she can't already do with ease. And she has 3 younger brothers in the house (5.5yo, 3, and 3mo) so there is always something else going on in the room or down the hall. It is a constant battle to keep her focused for 5, 10, even 15 minutes. We've tried charts, timers, freedom to pick the order of subjects. It's a constant battle. Ideally, I'd like her to cheerfully complete all her tasks with a smile and a thank-you-mommy before lunch so we can all get outside in the afternoon --- but I realize that is a ridiculous expectation. So I'd love to just see her progress in her ability to keep her attention on one task at a time for a bit of time. Any ideas welcome.

Is it possible that the curriculum / approach you're using is not a good fit for her learning style? In my experience when children are engaged by the learning process and materials, focus ceases to be an issue.

If you need to stick with the approach and materials you're using, you could try a on/off approach and see if that helps. Ten minutes sitting with her work (hopefully doing it, but maybe not necessarily at first), then the timer gets re-set and she has to take 10 minutes away from her work doing something else, then 10 minutes back at work, 10 minutes away and so on, until she's finished whatever is the day's reasonable expectation. I've been told that this can break the habit of prolonged wandering attention, and of parental nagging, and of the control battle that can take root. This approach creates a judgement-free natural structure where permission is granted to be distracted during those alternating 10-minute blocks, and there's a natural re-galvanzing of attention after the breaks ... with a small attainable expectation of a short spurt of focus.
