Is there a definative list of sight words.

I know some suggest a lot more sight words, but is there a list of "words that have to be sight words as they can not be sounded out" --

???

There are the Dolch sight words. But some of them can be sounded out. I used them with dd when we took a break from phonics because she wasn't progressing. She learned all the pre-primer and most of the primer words before we went back to phonics. It was a nice break for her and now her phonics have really taken off.

I think the point of the dolch word list is to go through all the basic words that everyone needs to be familiar with, whether they sound like they're spelled or not.

The Fry list does this as well:
http://www.usu.edu/teachall/text/reading/Frylist.pdf

You could also look at lists of most commonly misspelled words, and use that as a basis, since if they were spelled how they sounded a lot less people would probably be misspelling them.

Here's a link to one list for your convenience:
http://www.yourdictionary.com/library/misspelled.html

although this one is nicer since it gives tips for remembering the words:

Good luck!

for sight words, we use this website: http://www.littlegiraffes.com/sentencepractice.html

i used this with my daughter, and currently i'm using it with my son. the top of each page has the new words to introduce. i put those on index cards & we review them each week. he practices reading the sentence strips with the new words as well. we introduce new words/sentence sheet every week or two. it just depends on how comfortable he is with moving forward.

hope this helps.

Most of the "sight words" on the Dolch list can be learned phonetically, and I try to take that approach. I just make sure that those high-frequency words are part of the phonics practice when we get to that particular word pattern.

Here's a totally awesome article for explaining how to teach the high-frequency words according to their phonetic patterns.
http://www.thephonicspage.org/On%20R...ightwords.html

(Peruse the rest of the site to get lots of information for phonics and teaching reading too.)

According to this author, there are five words that must be learned simply by "sight:" two, buy, laugh (these are irregular), one and once. The rest of the 220 Dolch words follow a phonetic pattern or conforms to a regular pattern of "exception." The full list is here.
