GTT: blood sugar lower 1hr after the drink then before!

Anyone have experience with this?
My MD wanted me to get a 1 hr GTT early this pg because I am over 35, my last baby was 9 lbs. at birth, and my weight is a little above normal for my ht.
Anyway, I did my sugars at home (DH has a meter) and I was 90 before the 50g sugar beverage and then 83 1 hr after. I didn't exercise during the hour, but I did get myself and my two boys dressed for the day, so I was moving around.
Of course, if you google it there are articles out there that state below 88 is hypoglycemia and there is a increased risk for fetal growth restriction and pre-eclampsia.
I guess I should go and get it done at the lab or try it again.

I was over 35 when I had my last son, he was almost 10# and after my glucose test my blood sugar was 50. They never mentioned anything to me about it being low...

I had it done at the normal 26 weeks or whenever it is...

What did your midwife say about your level?

I was wondering about something similar. I had my GTT and my level was 70 afterwards (not sure what it was before drinking that juice). At first I was really happy to have "passed", but then I attended a lecture by a naturopath that was heavily based in human physiology, and he talked a lot about what lab values are "normal" and how he uses a more narrow range of normal than what the standard labs use because people tend to have signs of hormonal imbalance even within the traditional "normal' values. He also talked about hypoglycemia and it's relation to thyroid and adrenal function, and symptoms people might have if they fall into this borderline-low category, and I realized I had a lot of those symptoms!

I definitely get cranky and lightheaded if I haven't eaten in awhile, and almost passed out several times in the first trimester of this pregnancy (to the point where I was constantly sipping on orange juice to feel better...hello calories and early weight gain!). I always attributed these symptoms to needing to eat something, but never really thought of it as the medical condition "hypoglycemia", nor what implications (if any) that might have. Fortunately my pregnancy has been low-risk up to this point, and my baby doesn't seem to have signs of growth restriction - in fact, my MW thinks it's going to be a big baby. I don't know what to make of it, but I'm trying not to worry too much and am focusing on making healthy food choices and eating small frequent meals to keep my blood sugar relatively stable.

Well, my MW said it is fine and we can always do it again sometime if I am concerned. I am only 11 weeks, but apparently if you are "at risk" they now recommend doing the test in the first trimester. Thanks for the posts. I think it will be fine!

I am 28 weeks, and have a lot more risk factors - I believe I am technically Obese; every single one of my living children have been born weighing at least 9 lbs 2 oz (9-2; 9-3; and 10 lbs); I am over 35, will be either almost or slightly over 40 at time of birth; have had complications in previous pregnancies that are often times found in patients with GD - excess fluid in almost all my pregnancies and a 2 vessel cord for instance are all common in GD patients.

I haven't had to take the test early at any point in time, even in past pregnancies.

Also, my midwife gave me the option of eating a breakfast instead of the drink. I had to eat very specific foods - a waffle with 1/4 cup of maple syrup and a big glass of OJ and no protien. That drink makes me gag.....horrible.

I had that awful drink my first pg. Both my last and this MW just recommened a 50 g sugar drink. Most beverages have the information on the bottle. Last time I had an odwalla juice, this time I used chocolate milk.

chocolate milk also contains quite a bit of protein and is much more complex to digest than straight up sugar so perhaps that's what gave you those results.
