My finicky toddler...help mommies

Thread Starter
I have been feeding my 22 month old the NT way mostly, but with no
grains/starches. Recently my integrative doc suggested we can start with potatos (easy to digest), but get this-he spits them out. I have fixed sweet/regular all kinds of ways, hid them in meat, and loaded up with butter. He truly is finicky. He is getting his 2 year molars in too. We want to stay wheat free. I always worry that he is not as "fat" as his peers(but he was 1 lb. 10oz at birth, a micro-preemie) and is catching up now at 21 lbs. 5oz..Do you have any suggestions that will get him excited? thanks all

22 mo you say? That's about the age that toddlers seem to start 'deciding' they're going to be picky. I've read that sometimes you have to offer a new food a couple of hundred times to a child before they'll decide they like it. It might just be that and you should just keep offering. Mine used to eat about anything I put in front of him, and he's 22 mo now, and lately has been refusing a lot of things he used to love.

Otherwise, well, I guess we'd need more information about what he IS eating at the moment. I have no idea where to even start with recommendations.

Put them on your plate and tell him they are soooo tasty you do not want to share and he absolutely cannot try and steal one off your plate. Say it in an extremely saucy voice. Consider one bite swallowed a triumph.

see the other recent potato thread for cooking suggestions and anecdotal info on nutrition of potatos, but heresmy 2cents- potatoes arent a needed food in the human diet. in fact we dont NEED any starch or grains, or tubers to survive. we do NEED lots of fat, some protien, and man nutrients found in animal products. our bodies can make glucose (blood sugar) out of protien, its just not as immediate an effect as say, a peice of toast. considering your ds startedoff a micro-preemie, 22 lbs sounds pretty healthy at almost 2 years. im sure eventually he'll desire carbs/starches, as most kids in our society tend to do becauseof the over-availability and promotion of refined foods. let him wait if hes growing, healthy and uninterested in starches. i really like this idea of what an evolutionarily appropriate food table/pyramid might look like-

my son grew up eating a natural foods, but somewhat refined, type of diet and loves starches, bread, cereal etc. he's healthy too, but there ismore then one road to raise a healthy kid.
