so DD needed a urine sample b/c shes wicked sick and the doc said ill have a nurse come catheterize her and i said well she goes on the potty at home alot (we EC pt) can i try to have her pee in a cup first? and she looked at me like i was nuts ans flat out said no. at first i figured there was a medical reason she said no but then when i got home i though well if she were older they wouldnt cath her right? is there a reason to have catherterized her? how do your docs take ECing with your LO's?

Definitely.
I had my little boy at the hospital one night because he was freaking out, seemingly writhing in pain, and would not stop and I was worried he had an ear infection or something. Ears were fine, but the doctor wanted to rule out a UTI, so they wanted a urine sample. Well, I said, he could pee in a cup, probably. I actually missed it and was not able to get a sample, so I said I'd rather go home and collect something and then come back in the morning. Turns out, if you do collect it, make sure you have a sterile container (which I did), wash down the penis / vagina of the baby first and bring it in to the lab right away, because if they are testing for UTI and there's any contamination, they may not be able to tell whether there is an infection or the sample just got contaminated. I was lucky, because his sample was clean.

I would have probably avoided target words and said something like, "Sometimes when she's exposed to cold, she pees. Let's try that first before we do something more time-consuming."

I'm not much of a hero when it comes to re-educating doctors.

sometimes tjey do a catheter because it's really hard to get a "clean catch" even with an older child or adult. I worked at a children's hospital and my experience was that catheters were generally avoided. Usually non-potty trained kids & babes had a urine collecting bag taped to them to catch the pee in. Sometimes a catheter is preferred & sometimes the nurse might even get lucky & catch the pee if the baby starts to pee spontaneously.
I'd try explaining that as strange as it sounds my baby pees in a potty & that unless a catheter is necessary or the specimen is urgent that I would like to try having the baby pee in a cup first.
I actually have a urine speciman container that I get my son to pee in when we're out. It's much smaller than his potty, has a cover, and fits one pee just perfectly, plus it's discreet!

It really depends on how clean they need the sample, but I'd leave the practice of any doctor who couldn't explain that they'd need to cath even with an adult if that were the case. "No" is unhelpful and means that the doctor is only communicating what she thinks you need to know which means that there might be important information that you aren't getting.

when dd was a few months old I thought she might have a uti so I asked for a few clean catch containers at the clinic and asked how to get a clean catch. Then made the appt. and brought her in. They were blown away that I had a sample (they were ready to catheterize her when I pulled it out of my bag). They were so shocked and just couldn't fathem how I got it but said they wished everyone could do it like that. They gave me extra containers to take home.
I would suggest getting a few containers in case you need them in the future and not going in unless you have the pee with you so that they don't have the excuse to catheterize.
I am sorry you and dd had to go through that.
