does your ASD child go through periods when they seem typical?

The title says it all.

I have a referral in to get ds assessed for Asperger's, but the last few days he just seems so... typical (well, outside of the ADHD and sensory issues). These periods have come and gone for years, and I'm second-guessing myself on the ASD thing.

Thoughts?

Yeppers, although my dd does NOT have an official ASD diagnosis, just a tenative pre diagnosis of Aspergers. Her sensory seeking behavior is *mostly* homebased at this point, well except for tonight while we were at the phone company and was saying "mamma go push my face , and when I wouldn't, she decided licking would be fun" yuck. It seems to come in cycles. It's flustrating, I know, especially when thinking about things like school!!! Hugs.

also, since your son has the ADHD and sensory issues, that alone is enough to go ahead and get the evaluation for Aspergers. My doc, who specialises in Aspergers said that throughout his career, looking back, there were many, many patients of his that he diagnosed with add, adhd, and even bipolar, that clearly had Aspergers. He now started a non profit and he educates doctors on how to clearly identify adhd vs aspergers. I guess Aspergers is often misdiagnosed as ADHD. Hugs!

Yes. Seeing him interacting with same age neurotypical peers (outside of his sibling who I forget does so much compensating in interactions) brings me right back to reality.

My son can have moments (even hours) of seeming almost 'typical' but those periods don't last long.

I love those moments though. I cherish them. When I see him emerging like that, I try to drop everything and make that time super special for us.

yes yes yes. I have often said my son is autistic when he feels like it, and typical when he doesn't.

Yes, although we/ve been told both that he does have ASD and that he does not by different professionals. There are days when it (almost) seems there is nothing at all wrong with him. HIs biggest issue is sensory seeking behaviors and often being "out of it". When he is engaged, he seems pretty NT. On the days he is "out of it" and unengaged, he does a lot of sensory seeking and is very hard to connect with. Those are the bad days that I want to put him to bed and start all over the next day.
Hope that helps.

Thanks, everyone. I need to stop worrying so much about whether I'm raising a false alarm, here. Hopefully, when the assessment finally does come, he'll be showing his asd symptoms!
