Good baby Toys???

DS just turned 6 months old and I feel like we need more toys. However, I really try to stay away from huge, bright, plastic, light up type stuff. But I know he'd like it... He needs some new things though that are good for 6mo + Any good recommendations to load up on?

Here are a few of our fave:

Cool Wooden Rattle

Eric Carle

buggy rattles

plushy butterly chicken piano
http://www.amazon.com/Fisher-Price-M...6968433&sr=1-4
This one grows with baby from playing a whole song, to part of a song, to notes - every baby I have ever shown this to has freaked with joy & happiness.

There's just a few. I'm a fan of Plan Toys, Spiel & Holz, Holzinger. But a little bit of noise is okay. And I do mean LITTLE. But the piano is a very favorite for sure. So much so that the first one was so beaten & bruised I actually bought a second for the new babe.

Some faves in our house:

Box of tissues, different types of wrapping paper/ tissue paper, ribbons/strings, big cooking spoons/utensils and safe bowls,

Of course things that can be specifically purchased are: balls of all sizes, musical toys (rattles, drums, noise makers of all sorts), blocks of all sizes (with interesting things inside, haba makes cool ones).

Etsy has some cool natural toys! A lot of them are surprisingly affordable too. Of course, they aren't anywhere as cheap as plastic - but I figure we're going to have a bunch of babes and investing in a few quality toys that will last will be better for everyone than having gobs of plastic junk.

My DS is now almost 10mo (yikes!) but when he was 6mo his faves were a set of plushy blocks, each had different textures on each face of the block, one crinkles, one has a bell and the other squeaks. We also have a soft Haba rattle that looks like a flower.

Also, we've tried to get a few new fun things, but our 7.5 month old's favorite toys are a wooden bowl or random new things I let him have from around the house like a kitchen spoon. We made playsilks and those have been fun for pulling out of the basket and playing peek-a-boo. But now that he's crawling toys are generally less exciting than exploring!

Sophie the Giraffe is a big hit around here.

The wooden shape sorters are great, and blocks of different colors.

Shiny gift bags were also a HUGE hit: http://s180.photobucket.com/albums/x...rrent=68f4.jpg

He also loved those Lamaze toys...he had this musical caterpillar that he loved to squish and play with...Here it is: http://www.lamazetoys.co.uk/lamaze-m...hworm-13-p.asp

Those toys lasted really well!

also fabric books were big, to touch and pet and squeeze.

DD loves her wooden spoon! She lights up and screams as soon as she sees it! She also enjoys looking at pictures of other babies so books are a big hit. She really has a thing for paper but it usually ends up in her mouth so I will take a piece of it and put it in a ziplock-type bag and let her crunch it up - that seems to be a huge entertainer!!

But mostly she just grabs my hair and pulls until I get tears in my eyes... that is the best game of all!! LOL!!

DD's faves were everday household items; pots, pans, wooden/plastic spoons, food storage containers, remote control, keys, hairbrush, comb, box of tissues, cardboard tp roll, burp cloth, etc. Once she was able to sit up well, she started to help "unpack" Daddy's suitcase (after he got home from a business trip). DD still loves doing this! She did like a couple of actual toys; wooden stacking rings and plastic nesting cups.

At 2.5 yo, DD spends at least half of her time playing with non-toys. Children need things to play with and explore...but, those things do not need to be toys. I think that most toys are made more for adults than children...

Gus's fave right now is this little wooden box with puzzle pieces, they are large enough that he can't choke on them and they are wooden not cardboard. I just give him the box and he takes the pieces out and plays with them for the longest time. I'm trying to think of something similar that i can give him...I'll make up my own box with a bunch of small assorted things.
