Slow to gain newborn?

Just curious what I can do.

My baby was born on 2.11.10 and was 7lbs 15oz. We were discharged 3 days later and he was 7lbs 2oz. Went for a weight check last Tuesday and he was 7lbs 4.5oz. Today was his 2 week check and he was only 7lbs 7.5oz. 3oz in one week? They had me set him down on the scale and it instantly said 7lbs 11oz, but when I took the diaper off (he was in a sposie for the appt.) it went down to 7lbs 7.5oz. The diaper was dry and that diaper weighs next to nothing.

Anyway- the ped. was concerned that he wasn't back up to birth weight by now (12 days). It is worrying me a little as well. I haven't had any concerns until now. His diaper output is FABULOUS- he is in cloth 99.9% of the time and has at least 10 very wet and poopy diapers a day. His poo looks exactly like it is supposed to. I had difficulties nursing my first daughter and ended up pumping for her. My second daughter didn't latch until she was 3 weeks, and after that was exclusively breastfed (she only ever had breastmilk but had to use a supplementer while she was learning to latch), and she was well over the 100th percentiles for height and weight. She was a BIG baby. This is my first baby to latch well from birth, and the slow to gain is new for me- it makes me nervous that I haven't been pumping like I did in the beginning with my daughters.

Any tips on how I can get him to gain? If he is not close to birthweight by Sat. they want me to meet with a LC and get before/after weights. I will say that the only problem I can see is that he prefers one breast over the other, and he does a LOT more gulping/sucking from the breast he prefers. The other breast is a lot more shallow sucking, with a bit of gulping here and there. I would like to get him to nurse better from that side. He also is a bit sleepy and falls asleep easily on either side, so we have to work to keep him awake (more on the side he doesn't prefer). Honestly I wouldn't have thought there were any problems at all before this appt.- because judging by his diapers he is eating just fine.

Are diapers a more important indicator or do I need to be really worried about the lack of weight gain? Thanks

ETA- I just want to add that me or my DH hold him every minute of the day. He cosleeps in an Arm's Reach cosleeper because my mattress is not safe for having him in bed (I did bedshare with my dds- so this is also new for me). He has never had a paci or any other artifical nipple in his mouth.

Not back to birth weight at 14 days *can* be a warning sign, but in of itself does not necessarily indicate a bf problem.
How was the birth? Were you given fluids via IV? pitocin? was labor >14 hrs?
Can you hear him swallowing while he's latched on? Do you feel letdown (not everyone does!) and if so, can you hear him swallowing then?
How often does he nurse? (target is 8-12 feeds per 24hrs) What's his behavior when he's done? How does your breast feel after he finishes feeding?

Honestly, I'm heartened to hear that your ped is recommending a visit with an LC for a weighed feed. That's really the best way to determine milk transfer. And an LC will be able to evaluate his latch and give you tips on what to look for and little things you can do to improve his effectiveness/efficiency.

In the meantime, offer the breast at the slightest cue. And nurse skin-to-skin as much as you can. And maybe go over a list of hunger cues with your DH to make sure you're catching them all?
