Marrow bones are lovely just by themselves. I just pan roast them to get good color all around, then serve them with a lovely piece of bread.
But if you want to use them for broth, I'd definitely roast them first, I don't care for beef broth made with raw bones. Just be aware that a good deal of the marrow will melt into the pan when you do this, so just scrape it out into your stock pot.

Nope - many people eat it raw.
Seriously though, I just heat up my CI, drop the bones in and brown them on all 6(?) sides. By the time they're a nice dark brown, the marrow is soft and ready to slide out.
