DS is used to me sitting in his room with him while he goes to sleep at night. I am really, really sick of doing this. Sometimes I sit there for an hour, waiting for him to go to sleep. I need him to start going to sleep without me having to be in the room. It's not like his room is at the far end of the house and I'm insisting on him going to sleep with the light out and the door shut. Our house is EXTREMELY small. His bedroom is 5 steps away from the living room. I told him he can go to sleep with the light on and the door wide open, but he still refuses to do it . I don't understand this, and it's making me crazy. Yes I am a little mad right now because DS is sitting next to me on the couch after taking forever to go to sleep. He will NOT stay in his bed if DH or I aren't in there. I mean, he won't even STAND in his room, with the light on and the door open. Every night he wakes up and comes into bed with DS and me. I don't mind that, I just want him to start falling asleep by himself. Am I being unreasonable to expect a 4 and a half year old to fall asleep by himself? I'm having a baby in October, so this current arrangement will not work. Is there any way to get to DS to go to sleep by himself, or should I just wake him up earlier and put him to bed later, so he falls asleep more easily?

DD and I made a nighttime music mix that helps her fall asleep by herself. A white noise machine set to rain forest birds is another favorite.
She's also more likely to fall asleep in 5 minutes if my DH lies down with her rather than me.
A lot will change before October (there was a big difference between 4 1/2 and 5 for us), so I wouldn't worry too much.

Thanks, I told myself when I got pg that I wouldn't stress to much about the things I think DS "needs" to do before baby gets here. Sleep is just my hot-button issue.DS has a white noise machine in his room. He is quite picky about music, though, and doesn't like any sleep-inducing music, or any kids music at all, for that matter.
*sigh* I guess I will just have to wait this one out, since DS is SO resistant to going to sleep by himself.
