buying grain in bulk

I'm sold on the idea of grinding my own flour, but the shipping prices are astonishing! With s/h it seems to come out to around $1.50 - $2 per pound. I did some google calculations and it seems like it would cost me twice as much to grind my own - is that right? I'm tired and suck at math, so please do tell me I'm wrong Also, I know that there is a grain buying co-op a couple of hours north of me. Is there usually a good savings on grain that way? It seems that the shipping is by weight, which wouldn't make much difference whether it was one order or ten.... Hmmm, enlighten me because I really want to buy a grain mill and start doing this Thanks!

Our food coop will allow you to purchase 25 or 30 lb bags of wheat for a discount. No shipping charges, since it is delivered on their normal truck. Do you have a health food store near you? I've been able to make a special order from a couple in town that give a 15% or so discount, if you buy a whole bag. (Usually 25+ lbs.)

I'm having the same problem. I actually just got my NutriMill & have yet to source cheap bulk grain! I have spent hours emailing & calculating shipping & I'm still at a loss!
