We're just transitioning to a side car crib arrangement since our borrowed Arm's reach mini is needed back at its home base. We've got a Gulliver IKEA crib, which only has two settings. The top one ends up with our nearly four month old's mattress about 6 inches below our mattress---in a situation very similar to the Arm's reach, which wasn't ideal but didn't really bother us. We'd prefer the mattresses to be level just for nursing comfort and visibility, but so far it really hasn't been an issue. The two obvious solutions would be to get a second mattress to hoist up the top one, but that makes the bars around the crib pretty shallow and doesn't seem like a long term solution. Raising the crib up from below would possibly work, but require more effort, which brings me to my main point...
My big question is whether or not it's considered safe to leave in this position with this age of baby? We have a firm mattress and a tightly fitting sheet on our bed and have tightly rolled towels to keep her mattress tight against ours (but are planning on purchasing high density foam for long term use). It doesn't seem much of a difference from the "lip" of the Arm's reach, but should I be concerned about her getting stuck against our mattress? Or is it really more of an issue when there are gaps etc? Do some families leave it this way to discourage crawlers from getting out?
Thoughts from experienced side car users?
