Teething and Hives?

Thread Starter
My 11 month old DS has been breaking out in hives for almost 48 hours now. I noticed the first hive right after a lunch of sweet potatos and corn. This was his first time with corn so I assumed a food allergy. But would a food allergy continue to give him new hives nearly 48 hours later? No new lotions, soaps, detergents. The only other thing going on is some major teething. Has anyone's LO had hives with teething?

A food allergy can occur up to 3- 4 days after the food is introduced and corn is highly allergenic. Most corn is genetically modified as well, which could cause an allergic reaction. I have not seen hives with my DD's teething, but she only has 2 teeth and 1 coming through, so I'm not sure about that...

Sometimes after having a reaction to a food that is ingested a child can start to react to things that were previously safe for the child. For instance, my dd used CA Baby lotion for about 2 years and not only did she not react to it, it worked great for her skin. Then she had some coconut milk and got hives and after that started getting hives from the lotion (it has things derived from coconut in it). So, if you think your child reacted to eating the corn I would check for corn in washes, lotions, etc.

Have you tried Benydryl to see if the reaction subsides? if it does, then its a reaction to corn.
