Preparing for the Geo Bee

Did your kiddo(s) participate in this competition?

I have a 9 year old whose been studying World History and World Geography since September. The competition is this coming May at the Creative Arts In Action school. Its a school that offers classes and support for home education.

I've chosen to have him attend the World Geography class for the sole reason in helping us pronounce the Country's Capital. Some of the Capitals are really hard to enunciate!

I'm having a hard time trusting the teacher. Her two children will also be competing in the Geo Bee.

She seems unsure of her self when I go to her asking for the correct pronunciation of the word.

Example:

The Galapagos

Gal u POG Os

is how you pronounce it according to her.

Youtube's video of Natives to the island says it differently and I'm sticking with what they say.

Gul LA pa Goes

Are there any other resources that could help us pronounce the words correctly?

If you've been involved in a Geo Bee, you - yourself or your child, would you please share your experience?

My daughter did not participate in the geography bee, but it was mentioned in school when she was younger. The books that I know of for preparing for the bee are:

The Geography Bee Complete Preparation Handbook: 1,001 Questions & Answers to Help You Win Again and Again! by Matthew T. Rosenberg, Jennifer E. Rosenberg, and Michael Knight

National Geographic Bee Official Study Guide by Stephen F. Cunha

Afghanistan to Zimbabwe: Country Facts That Helped Me Win the National Geographic Bee by Andrew Wojtanik

I would think that a geographical dictionary would be what you want. It does have the pronunciation of everything.

We have this Leapfrog Explorer Globe--it has all kinds of games and pronounces countries and capitals: http://www.walmart.com/catalog/produ...uct_id=1527916 It's pricey, but I think it's a pretty cool toy.

Thank you for this list. I went to the library to see if they carried them. They don't. I'm going to purchase these on payday.
My son is still young, 9. He will have more opportunities so I see the books as an investment.

Another great investment! I'm told the capitals changes, a lot! Its too bad the library doesn't carry this.

I almost forgot, I spoke with the teacher asking her how she knows how to pronounce the words. She asked for an example. I spelled, Ljubljana

she googled "How do you pronounce Ljubljana" and got this:
