Good sling for hip hold?

I work outside the home, so I am not a regular babywearer. I used a Baby Bjorn when my baby was smaller, but now it puts too much pressure on my back & shoulders and I can only carry her for about 10 minutes in it.

She is now 19 lbs. and I can't carry her for very long without my arms & back getting tired (same goes for her caregiver). I thought a wrap/sling that I could carry her on my hip would be good, as long as it has two shoulder straps to distribute her weight. What works best for you? Also, is there a good style for either hip or back carry? It seems like some are better designed for back & some for front/hip.

I've never used a wrap and there are so many different styles (Moby, Mei Tai, Ergo, etc.) that I'm a little lost. Thanks for your help!

A woven wrap will be most versatile, but a mei tai would work too.

I use my Maya Ring Sling for a hip hold. Works great!

i don't think there are any carriers that offer two shouldered support for a hip carry. but if you want something that takes some of the baby's weight off your back in a hip carry, consider a scootababy. they have a firm structured waist band that puts a lot of the weight on your hips and then a strap that goes over one shoulder. if you are looking to only do a hip carry but don't want a ring sling or a pouch (both of which are great for hip carries), then the scootababy might be what you are looking for.

otherwise, there are a lot of mei tais and soft structured carriers that are great for front and back carries. a few of them do claim to be usuable for a hip carry, but really they work best for front and back. it's one of those "if you absolutely had to do it, you could" type of things, but i doubt they would ever be someone's first choice for a hip carry.

for mei tais, look at: babyhawk, kozy, freehand, mei tai baby
for soft structured carriers, look at: ergo, boba, babyhawk oh snap!, olives&applesauce
these are some of the "bigger" brands. there are tons of options. if you have any other questions, feel free to post back! good luck in your search.

Thanks for all the info! We are having a huge baby consignment sale here in a few weeks, so I'm hoping to find a good deal on a carrier (or two). I got my Baby Bjorn there last year for $12!

I used a SPOC for hip carries. It was basically a woven beach wrap that I tied the ends together. It was great for quick in and out stuff. Not so much for long periods of time. For longer periods of time, for me it was 30+ minutes, I used a SSC for backcarries. I have an AngelPack, it is well padded, and has an attached hood to support babys head if they fall asleep.
