Transitioning little co-sleeper to nighttime underwear

My almost 5 yo ds has been wearing underwear during the day for well over a year, and has had almost no daytime accidents in the last 9 or so months. I thought (hoped) he'd just stop peeing in his nighttime diaper and the switch to nighttime undies would be easy. No such luck.

He rarely pees in the middle of the night, but he does a few times a month. He also usually pees in his diaper in the morning before he's out of bed. Because he is in the bed w/me and scoots around, I don't see how to get something waterproof under him. Changing the sheets in the middle of the night sounds really unpleasant.

Any advice? How have other little co-sleepers made this transition?

I would ask over in the diaper forum. Maybe some wool trainers?

I always take my 5 year old to the potty when I come to bed, mainly as a preventive measure. She might be able to make it all the way through the night, but I figure why chance it.

Thanks rzberrymom. I might go there, but I'm mostly curious about cosleeping families. If he were in his own bed I think we'd just pick a date and start with underwear and deal with the accidents. This is how my parents did it with me and how several other families I know have done it. But because of the cosleeping it seems like a different situation and (at least in my mind) dealing with the accidents seems much more daunting. I really haven't talked to anyone irl who has dealt with this transition while cosleeping.

LOL.. I actually started a thread yesterday on this issue in the SN forum. As of tonight I'm going to put my very heavy wetter in huggies overnights, and if that doesn't work, I'm going to get a wool diaper cover so we can both stop waking up soaked! Good Luck!

As for the waterproof things under, umm yeah right. My dd is snuggled against me, usually her butt to my back. No help there LOL

I use a large waterproof mat sold for use with adults, and don't wear pajamas. Of course, I'm also mostly waking up to take her to the bathroom anyway so, ymmv.

Thanks sapphire_chan, is the mat something you'd buy in a drug store or with bedding? That's good that she's going to the bathroom in the night. Hopeful!

Funny Kailey's Mom. I have to figure out what the SN forum is and check it out.

Okay, I just did a good look for what might be the "SN" forum and even check the Abbreviations thread, but didn't find it. Someone fill me in, please!

Oh, and we haven't hit the nighttime underwear yet. DS is still having daytime accidents, lots of them, and using nighttime pull-ups. Was actually starting to wonder for myself the same question as the OP, as I sleep with DS.
