What is the RUSH?

I am a stay at home mom. Getting out of the house to work out is hard, but for the past 7 months I have been doing it 2-5 times a week. I need to vent about a complete stranger that almost killed me or at the very least broke a couple of my bones.

I can walk to the gym I go to. We get to go for free because my dh teaches a spinning class ONCE a week and we get a free membership. (Great yes!) I was jogging and it is winter and slippery. I jogged up to a small street with a light and it was red. As I was about to cross, it turned to green. There was one car waiting for it to turn green. Rather than allow me to cross as I was jogging (it literally turned as my foot stepped into the street,) the women in the car honked at me and sped off. Well we all know the laws of Physics. A body in motion will stay in motion. I put on my breaks, slipped on ice and fell on my bottom. if I had landed in any other way I know my wrist would have broken and my tail bone would have been hurt.
The women in the car actual saw me fall and continued to drive on.

WHAT WAS THE HURRY? I want to cry. That was such a close call. It could have meant me in the hospital or worse. It could have been one of my older kids that take walks in the summer.

Why are people in such a hurry? Pedestrians have the right of way!!!!!

I'm sorry that happened to you. No matter what her reason for rushing, there was no excuse for that kind of behavior. Some people are just badly behaved.

Wait... I'm confused.

You wanted to cross even though your light was now red and the car had a green light?

Yikes! That woman needs to get a grip, and some respect/love for her neighbor. But really if a light turns red on you it's probably best not to assume that people are going to wait. It doesn't excuse her behavior, but you want to be safe. I guess they would call that defensive jogging? I'm glad you're ok. What a scare!

There is a serious problem with pedestrian awareness everywhere I have lived. But someone who KNOWS the pedestrian is there and still goes?!!!!! She should get a ticket. I have always wondered what would happen if I got a license plate of someone breaking crosswalk laws and called it in to the police. Probably nothing.

Tons of metal versus a human body...yeah I always err on the safe side w/ pedestrians. I don't care if they seem rude or what. I'm not going to ruin my life and take another life just b/c I have the right of way.

She said that the light turned after she'd already stepped into the street.

While the driver was rude, this sounds like a dangerous intersection. There should be a delay between your light turning red and hers turning green, to allow anyone already in the intersection to get through. Also, didn't the light turn yellow to warn you that it was about to change?

As much as the driver was rude and clearly didn't care about nearly hitting you or causing you to fall, there are supposed to be safety protocols to prevent exactly this sort of thing. If those are not in place, I'd be concerned about getting them.
