2010 Moving Support Thread - Page 4

Okay, I am freaking out now. The realtors are coming tomorrow to see the house for the first time and it's a mess. Not a normal everyday mess (which would be more inexcusable, but at least smaller.) This is a huge mess of stuff we're decluttering, stuff my brother promised to pick up, the entire closet is emptied into the MBR to sort through....

When I sold my last place it was empty so I don't have experience to go on. Should I get everything picked up as much as possible? The downside is that I am exhausted and I'd have to undo some of my sorting and other work. OTOH, I want the realtors to get a representative idea of what the house usually looks like.

Or are they used to this sort of drama?

OK, it is time to start the countdown. We are now about 2 weeks from moving day. NO MORE EXCUSES! I have to start getting serious about packing stuff & stop wandering through my house wondering where to start. My sister is FINALLY comeing to get the china hutch out of here so that might help to give me more space. I still want to cry when I go into the garage. DH has got to get it together in there, but I can't nag him about it or I become the bad guy.

We have been here for 10 years & while I won't miss this house at all, it feels really weird to be moving all our stuff. I guess I need to focus on how excited I am for a new start. Even if that new start means downsizing alot

I would say they're probably used to the drama. Just mention to them that of course this stuff will all get picked up before you let them in with a camera. Our realtor didn't say anything when he saw the office or the garage, both of which needed serious work, when he was here the first time. When he came back again to take pictures things were much better.

I have a ways before we move but we have so much up in the air I'm starting to think that I should start preparing what I can. Right now we live in Japan courtesy of the US Marines. We were suppose to be moving back stateside in June but it now looks like they are waiting for anytime between November and January to move us. So, in the grand tradition of the military I can narrow our moving time from July to January. We have no idea where we will be going or when, at least this isn't the first time Ive been through this.

Right now I'm working on decluttering, organizing and making lists. I know that half of the stuff we have laying around we don't even use, I just haven't had the energy to get rid of it. Im also making a list of items we will need to get when we arrive back in the states. Right now all the furniture we have is government issued so Ill probably be redoing most of our house when we get back.

Our lease is up in August. We don't know where we are going to move, but we're looking and starting to pack.

Welcome, new movers!

We had meetings with the landscaper and the painter and I feel pretty good. A lot of stuff is coming together. Our goal is to have the kids at grandma and grandpa's house in 3 weeks. At that point we'll paint and clean the carpets, then stage. We're hoping to be on the market a few days before Memorial Day.

We got a ton of stuff cleaned out of the master closet. I think 90% of the stuff is gone. And out of that 90% the only stuff we kept was our suitcases, which went to storage. The other stuff was all things we didn't need. Why didn't we do this years ago?

The hardest part has been separating what I would have liked to get done in the house and what we should actually do before we sell it. I've lost objectivity so at this point I'm just taking the realtors' advice.

I don't think I updated on this thread yet that DH got the job he applied for! So we will definitely be moving back to our home state, only 20 minutes drive or so from DH's parents and 4 hours drive from mine, which sure beats 14 hours and 12 hours, respectively, that we have to drive now.

I am getting excited.

Our house selling is going slow though...we finally had our first showing yesterday after being on the market for more than a week. We have an open house this weekend. I'm trying to stay positive about that.

We move in middle/end of June.

Ok, so we moved out. And in the new apartment last weekend. I've already got most of the house unpacked. Still waiting for a large shelving unit before I can unpack arts/crafts supplies. Still have a lot to hang on the walls. So I guess I've graduated from this thread, the hard part is done. Now it's just unpacking and decorating! Last week was rough!

I think you're allowed to stay on the thread until you're all unpacked and decorated. And then afterwards, to encourage the rest of us.

We are getting moving on things! We are in contract on a house in NC and our house here is on the market (I don't expect it to sell before we move, and the sale of the other house is not contingent on it). We actually have our first prospective buyers coming to see our house this afternoon. I am trying to declutter and toss stuff but I've been ill. Oh well. I'll do the best I can!

We have cleaned out about 90% of the garage and maybe 25% of the storage in the basement (which isn't much because I got rid of a ton of stuff as we packed up each holiday over the last year or so, and that's mostly what's down there, holiday decor and gift wrap stuff).

Today the goal is just to make my place pretty and toss some of the clutter in the process. I do need to sit down and make a long term plan/set of lists.

Ugh, they rescheduled for tomorrow! And we have more coming on Saturday. I find this very stressful but I'm trying not to freak out and just keep the house as tidy as can be all the time. Not easy with 3 homeschooled kids, a dog and a teeny tiny house.

OK. I think I belong here!! I have been planning on heading out to our new location in June. Our place is officially under contract now! (after 17 months on the market!)
So far I have gone through and packed baby clothes (which i am not even sure if we are going to haul across the country). And I have packed up about 75% of all books. Kids and adults.
I am labeling all boxes with lists. I do not want to have to search through 15 boxes that say so n so's room to find something.
The buyer wants to close June 16th, and I am visiting with family the last 2 weeks in May, so I really don't feel like I can do a ton of packing yet, as we will need some things while familyis in town. I should have them do some packing.

Well, we had one showing yesterday and another this afternoon. My dog, fwiw, really doesn't enjoy this whole strangers-in-his-house bit. Yesterday we took him out for a walk (well, ended up just talking to my neighbor across the street) while the prospective buyer and real estate agent were looking around. I've looked at the other houses in our neighborhood that are in our price range and I think we look pretty good in comparison. We'll see.

We had the inspection done on the new house but I can't get the report opened in my email so I'm frustrated.

I did get some garbage bags today so we'll try and get more stuff packed up to donate or toss this weekend.

Thanks avent! Today was a good day: dp and I got a huge amount of the stuff in storage in teh unfinished part of our basement taken care of (mostly trashed, unfortch). We had a showing and the people looking had questions (so, yk, at least they didn't look at it and "oh, no, no way!" ). We have another showing scheduled for tomorrow. I'm sure everyone is trying to find their house prior to the April 30 contract deadline for the federal tax credit of $8k. I hope that works in our favor!

And I was able to open up the inspection report for the new house and while those are never perfect, I feel pretty good about this one!! Some minor things but no major surprises and that is a very good thing.

This weekend I made a list of all the things I need fixed by the handyman and bought all the hardware I needed (faucets, light bulbs, tp holders, towel racks, etc.) I also had my brother take out any remaining things he wanted to keep so I can give the rest to the haulers on Wednesday. And we made 3 donation runs.

I hired the baby sitter to come this week so we can jam. We're aiming to be out of here the 2nd week of May, although we can slip to the third weekend if we have to. I hope not, though.

I'm hoping I get the estimate from the landscaper/tree trimmer soon too.

So many moving parts!
