I think its a topic for some hot debate.
Some believe small amounts are safe. Some studies show even small amounts can cause negative effects. Other studies say that there's no set amount that is safe but for some women small amounts are fine and for others they aren't.
I'm of the mindset of once pregnancy is confirmed, I'm alcohol free. But then, I don't depend on alcohol for relaxation, I have better ways of doing it. I have no problem going without alcohol because of any amount of risk it may present.

OH! I hope you dont think I meant you would get in trouble for it...
just that in general, not even on this site, its a very heated debate... in the medical and scientific communities especially.
On one side, they say drinking it can help you relax... gives you extra antioxidants... etc.
on the other side they say you wont give your newborn milk mixed with wine, why give a preborn one wine?

Just playing devils advocate but, Well in a way many people do give their newborns wine, in breastmilk..and that is much more acceptable

I dont personally drink when breastfeeding either because of that...
I figure... I avoid medicines that may or may not cross the placenta because of the ill effects that have not been attributed to them yet that may be in the future...
why would I not do the same with a drug that is known to cause problems?

I have an occasional glass of wine and do not feel the slightest bit guilty. It seems to be very much a cultural thing, and I've yet to hear of babies in Italy or France having any issues or trends that we do not. I find the culture of fear in America staggering and I truly believe that little bits of wine here or there is not going to do a thing. That is also based on the facts that I have looked up, but I suppose nothing is ever certain.
Mostly I think 'we' worry too much.

In my last 2 pregnancies (pregnant with #3 now), I've had a 1/2 glass of wine in the third trimester to make some prodromal labor contractions go away.
I think I did it twice with baby #1 and once or twice with baby #2.
It worked well, and they don't have any problems. But, this is when I was 40-42 weeks pregnant. I definitely don't have anything in the first trimester. And probably wouldn't in the second.

I drink a half glass of wine occasionally throughout pregnancy (occasionally being maybe once or twice a month). I don't "need" it to relax, I simply enjoy wine and am not convinced in the slightest that a grand total of 3 glass in 9 months is going to be detrimental to my baby.

I'm 35+ wks and though I abstained in the first trimester (once I knew I was pregnant that is), I have had a small glass here and there though the rest of my pregnancy. Interestingly, I've found I don't have the same taste for it that I used to anyway so most of the time I have a sip of my husbands wine or beer and stick to my water.
My friend's mom is a midwife and actually recommends a small glass of wine now and again.

I couldn't agree more! My MW with DD said a few glasses a week is fine. But then again, I'm one of those people who thinks anything in moderation is fine. I still drink raw milk, eat stinky cheeses, take really hot baths, etc., while pregnant. For what it's worth, DD was almost 9 lbs. at birth and perfectly healthy.

Well, my DH tends to drink red wine when he drinks wine. And I already have heartburn from hades, and wine makes it BAD. Like, about to puke bad. So I haven't really had any wine.
However, I have been known to steal sips of DH's beer. And if it's really good beer I might ask him to fill one of our tiny wine glasses about 2/3 of the way... so maybe 3 ounces of beer? I've had him fill shot glasses with beer, too.
I don't believe that a tiny amount of beer/wine here and there are going to hurt anything. Heck, when I had a bad cough the midwife told me that if I woke up and was having coughing fits to go take a *sip* (just a sip, not even a real swallow) of hard liquor! I didn't- mostly because I can imagine what that would've done to the heartburn- which would have just made me cough more.
I did abstain in the first trimester, except for maybe a swallow here and there if DH had gotten an interesting beer.
