Good explanations in that link!

I take sips of my husbands beer occasionally and I'll have the rare half glass of wine once I'm well into my second trimester. I certainly don't feel guilty. I have no study to back me up, but I figure if moderate drinking were so incredibly detrimental to fetal development humans wouldn't be around anymore.

Now pesticides, chemicals, and other weird modern stuff scare me. I do my best to avoid them without stressing myself out too much.

Thats a big point though. I got drunk in the 2 weeks between conception and BFP with both DD and this pregnancy... but the placenta does not start functioning for a couple weeks yet after the BFP so that alcohol never so much as grazed either of my children.

After the point that the placenta kicks in (for me after the BFP because you cant be totally sure when that point is) I do not think its smart to drink. But then I am one that avoids pesticides, being around second-hand smoke, amusement park rides and high-risk driving situations. (I will not drive in storms, at night or on weekends/holidays when more people are drinking and driving. I know it doesn't up my risk a lot... but its still higher. BTW that has nothing to do with pregnancy I just avoid driving then in general.)

I smoked at first with DS and I will tell you YES it DOES cause harm. Even if you quit soon after getting that bfp it STILL harms the baby... the effect it has on your blood supply causes a weaker placental connection which can cause premature placental abruption. Thank my 22 weeks on bed rest for that knowledge.

Interesting link! I think the first 2 reasons in the article are a bit fallacious...but the discourse on research sounds about right....we see manipulation in all scienctific studies actually.

To the PP who asked...I don't know if it helped w/ supply or not. I mean, I never developed a supply problem....but I did notice that taking a sip induced a letdown! Very interesting.

Does beer really have that many vitamins in it? Or is it a sign of severe deficiency to crave it?

I have a beer or a glass of wine occationally- usually a half glass once a week or so- since entering the third trimester... or was it the second?

A few weeks ago it was our anniversary and we went into the city overnight and to a really nice restaurant for dinner. I debated ordering a glass of wine with dinner- I REALLY wanted one, but was afraid of looks or comments from the server or other patrons. Anyhow, I did order a glass, and we had a lovely meal. Later when ordering the desert our (male) waiter said, "I notice you are expecting, congratulations!" then he leaned over and said, "And I have to say, it's nice to see you enjoying a glass of wine tonight. My wife had an occasional glass with our three kids and they are just fine.". Then he brought us a complimentary mud pie for dessert. Yum. I had been so stressed about ordering the glass in the first place, his comment was very sweet.

The way it was explained to me by my midwife is the following (and I have to say it makes perfect sense):

"Better drinking the occasional glass of red wine than the occasional diet coke."

Relatively "benign" food items (in a cultural sense) are scientifically proven to be waaay more harmful to a pregnant mama. Asparatame...excessive caffeine....msg...junk food in general (not the occasional craving but like non-stop sugar/salt/fat stuff) are certainly more harmful.

Also, apparently after 32 weeks the baby is fully neurologically developed so after that milestone a few glasses a week are absolutely positively "safe".

Now personally every time I would try to have half a glass of wine every now and then I couldn't even finish it. I lost all taste for alcohol and anything more than a sip made me so flushed I figured whats the point.
I'd rather have some nice homemade lemonade or herbal iced tea! Yum!

Just pitching in my two cents - I have had the occasional 1/2 glass of wine throughout pregnancy, but not until the 3rd trimester when I wasn't sick anymore. I'm almost 39 weeks now and around 36 weeks, my MW said that I should have wine to help calm my cramping and sciatica. It definitely worked with just a few sips, plus I couldn't have much anyway without heartburn. It's very true that there are other ways of coping and relaxing, but since I LOVE wine so much, it's a nice treat to drink it occasionally. Some women probably think I'm absolutely nuts and irresponsible and shouldn't be a parent, etc. etc., but I just have to trust that I have made good decisions and followed sound advice from my midwife.

I didn't have any during my first pregnancy, but this time around, I have been more relaxed about having a little wine. DH and I really love red wine with good food, and I think I like sticking my nose deep in the glass and having it waft over my palate just as much as drinking a few sips! I didn't have any in the 1st trimester, but have had a few sips, with dinner, every now and then, and am surprised how very little it takes to just enjoy the flavor with my meal.

The big bummer for me is that I also LOVE lemon-drop martinis, and I just am not comfortable with drinking vodka in pregnancy. Alcohol is alcohol, and there probably isn't much difference between the alcohol in hard liquor and wine... but no lemon drops for me The bad thing is, I keep a citrus hand sanitizer in my car for when I have been in icky public situations, and every time I use it, the citrus makes me want my favorite martini!

Hey, fellow Richmond pregnant person!

And my personal story with wine: I was 20 weeks along on Christmas with my first baby, and I had a glass of wine on Christmas Eve (which probably didn't even raise my b.a.c. any because I was savoring it sooooo sloooowly, hahaha).

In the third trimester, I think I had about three glasses of wine total, a half-glass every couple of weeks, and only when I was stressed or upset-- I would have a half-glass of merlot and sit in a warm bath and try to chill out. Which usually worked great. So *shrug*.
