Throat/Lung Congestion

Thread Starter
My DD is 7.5mo old and caught a nasty cold/cough that is going around our town. I took her to the Dr. today because her cough is bad enough that she is actually choking on the mucus/phlem causing her to vomit

The Dr. said they have seen a number of hospitalizations in young children due to this virus.

Any suggestions to help her clear everything out? I have taken her off the little solids that she was getting and back to EBF until this is better.

I'd like to be of help, but I'm actually in the same boat. DS is 8 mo old and I'd hoped to learn from the replies to this thread how to help him through the congestion he's battling.

A call to the dr instructed us to use our humidifier and nasal spray if necessary. But I'm wondering about other ways I can be proactive to encourage his improvement...surely waiting it out isn't the only option.

I have been thorugh this several times with DS (he is almost 2). Only once did we have to give hima nebeulizer tx.

here is what we do:

1. Saline mist and suction at every diaper change
2. hot mist humidifier with lavender and eucalytpus oils at bedtime (or all the time if you can have it wherever she is.)
3. Doses of SA to bowel tolerance. Dosing is as follows. start at 250mg per 2.2 pounds of body weight (every 24 hrs) and go up from there until stools become loose. decrease a tad and that is the right dose. Divide that up over a 24 hr period. I disoolve the SA in milk and give it to him that way.

4. We also use a variety of herbal things prescribed to us by our ND.
in particular we like the following :http://www.naturessunshine.com/us/pr...d-2-fl-oz.aspx

5. Garlic oil drops and OLE drops. They are both anti-viral and anti- bacterial

all of these can be safely used in children/babies.

How do you give the garlic oil? I've only used for ear issues. What is OLE drops? You give all the natureshine products to your toddler?? They look great!

Be careful with a saline mist, if you use it for too long it can cause rebound congestion (ask me how I learned this!).

I'm dealing with lung congestion right now and a warm mist humidifier would be a godsend. I've settled for wrapping warm fabric around my throat and chest. Being upright helps my body more gently expel everything.

I had that last week suprisingly it turned out to be bacterial respiratory infection and I had no fever either but the antibiotics helped me .

I even had to use my inhaler and get on a nebulizer for breathing treatmet.
