prefolds sizing question

Thread Starter
I'm planning on starting cloth diapers with my twins, who are now 5 wks old, in another month. They are not identical twins, and have very different body shapes. My dd (7 lbs) is smaller and thin, and my ds (8.5 lbs) is chunky so far.

I'm cloth diapering for both health reasons and economical reasons, so I do want to save money. I enjoyed prefolds with covers with my older boys, but that was soooo long ago (they are 8 and 10 yrs old now). I don't remember there being different sizes, I only remember one size of prefolds.

My question is -- do I really need to buy Small size, and then Medium size? Is it possible to use just one size prefold the entire time? I want to buy Diaper Rite.

How long can Small size last? Or, alternatively, how soon can you use Medium? Do you really need to be 15 lbs to use Medium? Does small really get too small at 18 lbs?

Thanks for any insights!

If you are going to be trifolding wiithout using a snappy then a small will last awhile. My dd is still in smalls at nearly 19lbs. (reg. infant size from cottonbabies) They absorb plenty, but would not come close to being able to snappy/pin. I did order her a dozen diaper rite mediums just because I wanted the option of being able to go coverless with a snappy if she has a rash or whatever. I love that the smalls laid in the cover are not too bulky on her, but I can't compare with the mediums as I just ordered them.
http://greenmountaindiapers.com has a lot of pictures of sized pf on different sized babies, maybe that would help.

I would think you'd want the different sizes. Larger prefolds are going to be overwhelming on tiny babies, but it's up to you whether you're ok with that or not. You could just keep it simple and get Infant prefolds for now, and then size up to the Premium size. DiaperRite and GMD prefolds have the larger variety of sizes which helps get a better fit at each stage, but the standard two size system is what most everyone else carries.

Or if you want a truly one-size option why not look into flats?
