Happy Mawlid an Nabi/Birth of Prophet Muhammad Muslim Mamas :)

So, today or tomorrow is Prophet Muhammad's bday... if you're Sunni. (12th of Rabi'-ul-Awwal). (Islamicity says today... but my prayer calendar says tomorrow.) Shi'as celebrate in a few days.

I know that some Muslims do not celebrate... but living in the States, I try to make a big deal of any and all Islamic holidays that I can. I know that there are special sweets that you can get just this time of year in Egypt. DH's Uncle brought us a giant box one year.... and oh man... so good, even though no chocolate. Sesame seed candies... tons of yummy nougat/torrone like things.... apricot chewy things... etc. I thought about trying to make divinity with pistachios in it... or sesame seed candy... but it's a yucky day here. Maybe on the weekend. We are planning to bake some cupcakes and decorate them with dinosaur sprinkles (well, that's what we have ).... and DD insisted that we buy birthday hats for tonight.

What do you guys do, if anything?

Oh, ISA, I'll also be listening to the Celebration of Mercy event on the web tonight. Shaykh Hamza Yusuf just confirmed as well.

Honestly, it's still new for me too. It's tough as I don't know of any major events that happen here in the States... so I just kind of try and make my own.

I don't have traditional recipes, as most Egyptians I know simply buy their candy, and don't make it. But I've found these which look good

Sesame Seed Candy from Paula Deen

My guess is that to make it more Middle Eastern one should use honey over brown sugar. Like this one....

Not traditional, but I think Divinity with Pistachios is about as close as I'll get to the nougats...

Toronne...almond nougat

It was a webcast on Thursday night, which I ended up missing because DD was sick and vomiting all over the place.

I think they might rebroadcast it for free... or so they're saying... but I don't know when.
