My mom had horrible births, but I think a lot of it had to do with the care and support, not necessarily with how her body wanted to give birth. She pushed for my sister for 4 hours. But she was on her back. Who knows if she would have come faster if my mom knew she could get on hands and knees or squat or whatever.

I had great births so far. No complications, beautiful, and "easy".

Mine were all similar. Lots of pre-labor and early labor. My mom was there for the early labor with 2 of mine and she had this perfect sense of where I was at. She was also the first to bring to my attention that I had passed early labor and entered active labor - each time because she noticed the change in my mood. She said it was all too familiar to her (she had 7 unmedicated births).

Very similar! My mom had two of us, both pokey labors but then a fast hours dialation from about 3/4cm to 10cm and a pretty short pushing stage. Mine were just like that as well.

My first two were very similar to my moms'. She went into labor on our after her due dates, had 13 hour labors all three times and labored naturally except for a pudendal (I think?) block that was put in for the doctor to cut an episiotomy. Two of the three of us were born posterior/sunny side up.

My first two were 11 and 13 hours long, on or after my due dates, and my second was posterior.

My third was a 2 hour labor start to finish. Go figure.

My mother's longest labor was about 4 or 5 hours. I came in 30 minutes. Her 4th baby was a c-section for placenta previa. My first labor was a c-section after 29 hours of labor. My 2nd was a VBAC after 41 hours of labor. Interestingly enough, my mom was born on the hospital stairs and her mom was born in an outhouse b/c things happened so fast. Don't know why the fast birthing genes stoped with me!

I was so convinced I was going to have births like my mum.

She had three homebirths, first lasting about 10 hours, second about 8 hours, third about 3 hours!

I had a 26 hour labour homebirth to hospital transfer ending in a forceps delivery.

Hopefully next time!

Mine was different. My mom's were both very fast. Her entire labour & delivery for my sister was 1.5 hours and for me she took 45 minutes. My labour & delivery with Jude was about 9 hours. I had steady contractions all day the day before, then my water broke at 10.30 pm and he was born the next morning. My mom went from no contractions to water breaking, contractions, then baby. My sister was born 3 weeks earlier and I was 5 days earlier than my EDD. Jude was 9 days past his EDD.

Forgive me if someone already said this, but do remember that although there does seem to be some kind of genetic/inherited tendency to the way our bodies birth, we do inherit half of our genes from our dads -- even the birthing genes. You might get a more complete idea of your possibilities by also talking to any paternal aunts that you have. In my case, I don't have any paternal aunts, but my grandmother did say that all of her babies were quite late. My mom also had 2 out of 3 of us after her due date. So I probably have an inherited tendency from BOTH sides to go late -- which helps to know as I sit here 4 days past my due date.

I had one labor kind of similar to my mom. My 2nd labor lasted 5 1/2 hours and wasn't that bad except for the last 10-20minutes, my mom labors lasts about 6 hours. My 2nd pregnancy was also the one I didn't do much exercising and my mom just doesn't exercise.

Both our first pregnancies was late. Her 2nd was on time. Mine was early by 9 days.

The difference with my first is that I exercise and the labor was only 2 hours.

My water have also broken first with both my pregnancies without me going into labor within the 24 hours. 1st one took 46 hours before labor and 2nd one took 60 hours before labor.

so the majority of us were different. i have had only one labor but it was more than 40 hours whereas my mom's first was only 8. and her second was only a little more than 1 but i am not hoping for that because there was preterm labor involved.

My first labor was pretty similar to my mother's first labor (with me). ~24 hours, at home, no complications.

My second & third labors were a lot shorter than anything she ever had, though. 6.5 hours and 4 hours respectively. Her other labors were more like 12 hours.

I would postulate that whatever the genetic basis may be, most of us have labors that are influenced (in a variety of ways) by our mother's labors - and our sisters' labors. These are the stories that we hear the most - or don't hear the most but that when we hear them even once hit our hearts the hardest. We react to them or emulate them with every bit of our bodies and brains and emotions. There's an intensity . . .
