Enamelware. . .Good or bad?

Thread Starter
I want to replace my plastic cups for this kids, with a sweet inexpensive choice--- I came up with enamelware, a lot of Waldorf folk have them around too, are they safe? Seems like they could contain lead or other metals, what are these made of anyhow? I just picked on up at REI and now I'm wondering how safe they are???

Any thoughts?

This comes up fairly often around here, and the simplest answer is that nobody's 100% sure. But I've never seen a study saying that enamelware is unsafe. Its been around for a LONG time, and thus I figure its as safe (on average) as most anything else with a coating. We eat off enamelware plates/bowls everyday and I have for my whole life (excepting the few months/years when I didn't live here in college).

They do get hot though from hot foods sitting on them so you do have to watch for that with littles around.
