I was an elementary teacher before DD and SAH. I found an ad on craigslist for a tutor and while that didn't pan out it seems like something that I could do. I would prefer to work one-on-one with kids but the online thing might work out, too. Anyone have any experience/advice they'd like to share? I was wondering about pay and advertising in particular. Thanks so much!

I just saw your title and had to reply because I can't believe I am shelling out $60/hr for someone to work with my 9 year old. I have my M.Ed, so it isn't like I don't have a clue, but working with your own child is different than someone else's. If I have to get him up to speed with the public school I think I'll kill him first!
I get frustrated, he gets frustrated and we get no where. The tutor does the same things I was doing and he thinks it is the best thing since cookies!
I know many other kids in my town who are also paying tutors, so it seems there is a market for it!
Good luck

There is definitely a need for tutors - and there are a lot of tutors out there, so it can be really hard to build up a clientele. I can think of two people I know who made pretty decent money as tutors. They both worked as teachers in a school, and their clients were the kids at the schools they worked at. Both eventually left their teaching positions after getting their tutoring businesses going. They lived in different areas, and so charged different rates - one was $40/hr (she had the students come to her home) and one was $70/hr (she traveled to the students homes). Good luck!
