My 9mo DD has been working on solid foods for the last couple months and lately seems to have been really enjoying it.
Last night, though, I gave her an avocado wedge with the peel still on (as I've done numerous times since December - she loves avocado) and after eating a bit of it she started coughing and getting a bit upset. I got her out of the chair and was walking with her, she was still coughing and fussing and mucous started coming out her nose with what seemed like bits of avocado in it. I figured she had gotten some up in her nose, poor thing. She remained agitated, off and on, until I put her to bed a little while later.
She woke several times in the night, coughing, sneezing and crying and just miserable with mucous coming out of her nose. I spent most of the night nursing her, walking with her, and just trying to help her through it. I figured there must still be something in the back of her throat or her nasal cavities and I was worried that it was a piece of avocado peel stuck in there.
This morning she was still having trouble so we made arrangements to take her in to the pediatrician. She was still coughing, sneezing and had a very runny nose. At one point on the changing table she coughed very forcefully and I wondered if that could have dislodged it, but she was still clearly uncomfortable.
The pediatrician inspected her throat, nose, ears, everything and did not find any foreign matter in there. He did see that it was inflamed in the back of her throat and speculated that there had been something there but that she had dislodged it and swallowed it. She also had a 99.7 temperature so he speculated that she might have a little cold also.
She was very subdued the whole trip and when we got home she got very fussy again. Different - she was not coughing anymore but still had a lot of mucous and just got fussier and fussier. This evening she was feeling more feverish so I took her temperature and it was 102.3. I gave her infant tylenol and a homeopathic remedy (both recommended by a homeopath who is a friend of the family) and put her down and she's still restless with a lot of snot coming out her nose.
Argh. So we're still very concerned.
My question is, has anyone else had BLW babies who have gotten food up their nose? She had a similar, but milder, incident just the night before with the crusty bit of a roasted sweet potato. She managed to get that out her mouth in a relatively short time. (previously she's had a few rough moments gagging on some foods but as I said, she really seemed to be getting the hang of it now.)
Should I be more careful with things like avocado peel?
And could there be any correlation between this incident and the (seeming) cold that she has come down with now?
Thanks for any input - I know this is kind of a bizarre one.
