My onions sprouted in the bag- what now?

If you'd like photos, see my blog (in my profile).

An onion sprouted in my kitchen, in the bag in a pretty dark area. Strange. The sprouts on the one onion are 7" or longer.. and the other onion was barely sprouted (sprouts still bent over inside the onion about to poke out).

I didn't know what to do, and DD was pretty proud of them, so I put each in a glass of water with the bulb of the onion half covered. They have grown more and sprouted white roots.

I've read that these flower, but I don't really know.

What should I do with them? Thanks

I say plant them. Who knows what will happen to them, but you probably will get a flower from them. It may turn into something good to eat, although I don't think you can grow a new onion from a current big onion. But, maybe some huge chives!!!

Plant them! We got great potatoes last year by just throwing some old sprouted potatoes in the garden rather than the compost. I buy the bulk garlic at the store even though I know I won't eat it all by the time it sprouts. (I can get about 35 heads for the price of 4 individual heads and we end up consuming about 18 heads.......) I've been saving them to let the kids plant (keeps them busy and we may get something out of it.) I plan to compare the results of what the kids plant with what I planted in the fall.

Trial and error lead to some of the best eats!

Thanks!

I think they will go to seed.. I don't know how to plant them though. It's cold here so I'm going to wait until after our last frost. Don't know when that is though-

I just moved from Cook county and Will county area. I was told not to plant my tomatoes until Memorial Day. So, guess what I spent my Memorial Days doing
