Cover question....

I've noticed lately that 'my' covers are leaking (SWW) I've had them for a while so I guess it's time. I'm going to make my own to replace them but I'm not sure what kind I should make - thoughts? I'm getting good at making side snapping cover with PUL and FOE (see post with picture!) but the elastic seems to dig into Dd sometimes. I just got some windpro from MM but am not sure about constructing them - I don't want to make pull-on covers so how do I attach the elastic if not using FOE? Should I just make casings? TIA!

I always do casings for my elastic & it works great. One note, though. Around about 10 months I thought my covers started leaking too. I finally realized (at 12 months ) that it was just the fact that they were getting tighter (which caused them to wick more quickly) and he started peeing more. So now the dipes I've started making are REALLY absorbant. The same covers (when used with the new dipes) are holding wonderfully -- even thought they're really getting too small.

As for what kind, well -- I've made some from all three (wool, fleece, and PUL). The easiest, imho, to make are the fleece, but the best ones are the wool. I would experiment with all three -- if you're anything like me, variety makes it more fun! I don't know what you do for nighttimes, but I made a pair of wool "longies" from the sleeves of a wool sweater, and they are AWESOME! In the morning his dipe is completely soaked, and I can push on the wet area (over the wool) with my hand and not feel ANY wetness. I made some pants in the same style with fleece and they work almost just as well.

Have fun!

You can make casings or you can use Lastin which you sew in using a three-step zigzag stitch. If you use Lastin with Windpro, get the 3/8", not the 1/4". I have done both casing using 3/4" twill tape and Lastin sewed in and I think Lastin alone is the best. It has more stretch and less bulk. I also recommend the Cuddlebuns pattern.

The best way I've seen to do single layer fleece covers (it would probably work with wool, too) is to add a seam allowance just where you want the elastic. THen you stitch the elastic to those spots and turn down the casings and topstitch. This would work with any kind of elastic. I have a pic if it but can't recall where I saw it. LMK if it makes sense or I'll try to post the pic I have.

i make ds's dipes with the kwik sew pattern #2062...it fits really good, is simple, and very easy to make...for his covers, i just cut around the dipe pattern about 1/2 inch bigger than it's supposed to be...works great for a cover.
