Quakers and Parenting

Thread Starter
I did not know wether or not to post this in spirituality or here... I think here is more fitting as I am more interested in the parenting aspect.

So basically...are you a Quaker - and how do you parent? How are the two tied into eachother (your religion and your parenting practices)?

i am a quaker and i'd like to give an answer to your question, but i am very very sleepy right now and i am not sure i could give you the kind of considered, in-depth response that your question deserves. how's that for a quakerly response, eh?

i will try to get back to this tomorrow, but you can feel free to pm me if i forget.

i do believe there is a tribe of quakers floating around here somewhere, too.

This is a religious studies sort of question, so I am going to move the thread over there.

DH is Quaker(liberal) and I guess I fit too. We try very hard to parent with compassion and recognize that our children each have their OWN divine light to nourish.
I never really thought of our natural progression into AP being tied to the beliefs that make us "Quakerish". But I suppose there is a very real connection.

I had a roommate in college whose mother was a Quaker. It came up one day that her parents had NEVER struck her or her 8? brothers and sisters. I came from a family that did and I was amazed that anyone could grow up without getting hit, so she talked to me about it. The way she explained it, her mother's Quaker beliefs very much played into how they were parented. Not only did they not strike their children, but they took the time to talk to them and make sure they understood why something was a good or bad decision, and how their behavior effected others around them. I believe the way she explained it was "My mother is a Quaker so they believed xyz" I got the very strong impression that her others religious beliefs played an integral part in her parenting.
