For those not in the US, what were you told yb your doctor/midwife/whoever you see for prenatal care about alcohol during pregnancy?

Nothing! But Germans also tend to stay on the safer side and avoid drinking while pregnant or nursing. That said, I drink a glass of something maybe once a month.

In my province ( Canada which essentially has the same attitude as the US), there are ads everywhere that state that no alcohol is best when pregnant.

A glass of wine or beer is fine starting from 5 months of pregnancy or so.

In Canada they say to stay away from it. I just poor out some Strawberry Daquri and will soon poor out some really good Sangria and when I my former roommate comes for a visit in a few days I'm making her take the bottle of rum she left here.

My husband's friend in Finland was told (I'm pretty sure I remember this correctly but I wouldn't swear to it) no alcohol in the first trimester and no more than two units a week for the rest of the pregnancy. I cannot, however, remember how much a unit was. I think it was just a drink -- a glass of wine, a bottle of beer, and whatever the standard measurement is for hard liquor.
