Mathematics Enhancement Programme (MEP)

Has anyone used Mathematics Enhancement Programme (MEP) for math, for any age but especially young children? How was it to use? Did your kids learn the material? Did they like it?

I have been exploring this program extensively the past few weeks and I really really like it. When my dd finishes an online class in April we will start up with MEP but year 9, so not for the younger crowd.

I know of two moms using it for the younger set and both have been very pleased. There is a yahoo group for homeschoolers using MEP that I recently joined. It seems quite helpful and mostly contains kids using the early years.

I loved the Singapore math we did for the elementary years, but if I had it to do again I would do MEP and supplement with some Singapore word problems. I don't think you need to supplement MEP, but we have never stuck with just one program and I'm sentimentally attached to Singapore. LOL

I used the first half of year 1 for K. We really enjoyed it, but we dropped it not far into the second half. It started to seem very monotonous and boring at that point. I think next time around, I'll star reception at 4.5, then do the first half of year 1 for K. I've heard lots of people say they dislike the second half of year 1, but love all the rest of it.

Editing to add that reception is really just games and looking at pictures and stuff, so perfect for a really little kid, imo.

I tried to use Year 1 last year for Nikolai's kindergarten year.  Nik is a very strong reader and a history buff, and math is not something he has ever done for fun.  He learned a lot, and I was very happy with the program, but halfway through he started to say that he hated math.  We've since switched to Math Mammoth and Nik seems much happier.  However, Nate is getting ready to start kindergarten and has a very mathematical mind.  I'm going to use MEP with him, and I anticipate that he will do very well and enjoy it.

Since the program is free, not counting printing costs, it certianly can't hurt to try it out!  I suggest that you only print a couple of months worth of lessons to begin with, so that you don't waste money and paper if it turns out to be something that doesn't work for your children.

Thanks Jessica.  I plan to only do a little at a time, the printing, and put it in a binder.

Big seems to have a good math head (like his daddy) so we will see if nothing else it should give me an idea of where his level is when / if i need to get a differnt program
