Neighbors

One of my neighbors was outside his house screaming that he was going to kill a woman last night. I am not sure which one because there are condos across the street from us. I called the police because it was very disturbing and a woman was screaming. We don't live in the kind of neighborhood where you would expect things like this to happen, but they happen a few times a year.

Anyways, my dd heard the jerk and she is now scared to go outside. This is the first time she has been awake late at night and heard yelling like this so it was scary for her. I told her the guy was probably drinking alcohol and that it made him say bad things, but that we would still be safe because the police would take care of it. She wasn't convinced. She slept with me last night and she doesn't want to go outside today. Our beds are really small, but I don't mind her coming into mine every once in a while. We do need to get out of the house sometimes though. Have any of you handled something like this? How?

It would depend on how old your DD was. If she was older, then you might be able to talk with her about how some things are scary, but it can be good to push through that. You could talk a lot with her and convince her to go outside with you for a short time and then proceed from there. If she's younger and not able to really get this, you might have to wait and hope she lets it fall to the back of her mind. Perhaps there is a story book that could relate to fear and conquering it that would help.
