Occupying toddler while you're busy with new baby

I've got a bunch of friends and family who are due with their second babies soon, and thought that a great gift would be a basket of toys and suggestions to keep the oldest occupied (without a lot of supervision) while Mom's busy with the new baby.

I'd love to hear your ideas!

can you be more specific on age of older siblings? Not everyone agrees on the age toddler no longer applies to a child

For my ds, the best things to keep him occupied on his own are sets that he can use to make things. Mega blocks, wooden blocks, train set, a set of PVC pipes and joints, etc. For some kids, crayons and coloring book would be perfect. A baby doll was perfect for my dd1--she likes to put the doll in a mini infant seat, a doll sling, a stroller, give it a paci, read it books, etc. while I'm taking care of the real baby.

Computer games have also been a lifesaver for me. My 2 older kids both learned to mouse before age 2 and love to play at starfall.com and some little CD Rom games we have.

I like to give "becoming an older sibling" books as gifts--those could go in a basket as well. My kids don't sit and look at books on their own for longer than a minute or two but I like to read to them while I'm nursing. I really like A Baby Sister for Frances by Russell Hoban, the Little Critter new baby book, the Bearenstein Bears new baby book, to name a few.

Well, there are two that are coming up at the end of March, both with young 2-year-olds. Two other older siblings will be in their mid-to-older-3's by the time the baby's born.

And thanks, K-Mom3, for the suggestion of a book about becoming an older sibling -- terrific idea!

things that have worked well for my dd (who was 21 months when dd2 was born): stickers, playdoh, colouring stuff, sorting things (ie. different colours of poker chips, different sizes of foam shapes). she also loves to have me read her books while i'm nursing.

2 yo - playdoh, pokerchips, deck of cards, bouncy balls or tennis balls.

3 yo - safety scissors and yarn, a set of bolts and nuts, schleich lifelike animals.

If you can find a small play parachute it is the #1 toy my 2yo and 3 yo play w/ right now (I think I understood you right that there are two siblings, if there is only one it wouldn't be a good preoccupier, but with two they can do it on their own)
