22 MO Fever for 4 days, now no fever but excessive crying...??

My 22 month old son woke up VERY fussy from his nap. He has had a fever since Tuesday, started out as low grade, went to HIGH in 24 hours, stayed there for 48 and then back down, Now he is really not feverish at all. I've been on here searching old boards all week following the threads that help with fevers. We only felt the need to medicate a few times when he got up to 104.4 and 104.8. kinda scary and I wimped out, other than that, we let the fever run it's course, and he was really ok most of the time. He was not eating well but he was nursing great so I tried not to worry. He has very few other symptoms accompanying the fever. No normal ones anyway.
He has been grabbing his tongue, like it's covered in hair or something. I mean, when he nurses, sometimes he gets one of my hairs in his mouth, and he says "mommy hair," pulls it out, or I help, and we move on. This is like something is bothering him, but I can't SEE anything. I"m waiting for the hand, foot mouth symptoms to present, but nothing. Now with the crying, I'm of course worried about meningitis, but his neck does not seem sore. I'm doing the old school test; lie on your back, look at your toes and then lift your leg. If you scream, go to ER. DP got a look at his throat, nothing. I poked him all over, looking for a sore spot that would make him squeal, nothing.
DP has him in the wrap and they are taking a walk outside. He's not crying but he's not happy either.
Any advice/ideas would be appreciated.

I have really no idea, but the last time my DD had a long-lasting fever, it turned out to be Roseola (https://health.google.com/health/ref/Roseola). Maybe keep an eye out for a rash?

He's distracted now with Wizard of OZ and playdoh. Shirt is off... looking for Roseola ... I think I may see a few little dots. It's subtle, but something may be there.

sounds like my house a couple weeks ago except there was a cough with it. it eventually went away on its own, virus I guess.

Trust your mama instincts. It does sound like Roseola. High fever, no other symptoms. But just keep a close eye on him and follow your instincts, you'll likely know if its something serious. Watch for the rash. As for him being fussy, has he eaten much yet? May be that he is feeling low now from being sick and not having an appetite. See if you can get some food in him, maybe that will help. Hope he feels 100% soon.

It was pretty subtle with my DD, too. I only noticed it sitting next to her at dinner; it was on her neck and upper back. And it never got much worse -- don't know that we would have noticed it on a normal day.

DD just went through this. High fever and crying and a lot of temper-tantrums, which was really out of the ordinary. For her it was a combination of three things.

*The virus that has been going around was pretty much just a fever and sore throat. My six-year old nephew and DP both had really high fevers.
*all four of her two-year molars are coming in.
*I'm not 100% sure about this one but I think she had a primary herpes infection AKA gingivostomatitis. She never got any mouth sores, but had every other symptom including her gums being really, really, red and bleeding at the slightest touch. Plus I had just gotten over a cold sore. HTH, and your LO gets better soon.
