Giving up dairy-what about Goat products?

I'm posting for a friend whose bf 3 month old got tested for lactose-sensitivity. (I think she said cow-milk to be exact), she's having a tough time going dairy free but has been for a few weeks.

Is it possible to do goat products in small doses for the nursing mom?

I am not sure, but I think she could add ONE thing in and see how she does. Sometimes people who are lactose intolerant can tolerate goat's milk or goat milk cheese...sometimes not.

Sometimes people who are lactose intolerant can handle aged cheeses ( like cheddar) or yogurt. Just depends on the person.

If she REALLY misses her dairy, she could try slowly adding a bit of goat's milk to her diet and see how her LO does.

Hopefully, some of the moms who are still nursing will get on and have more advice.

A lactose-sensitivity doesn't make sense to me as breast milk has lactose. Most babies have a problem with the cow's milk protein, not the lactose. We are still dairy-free because of DS's issues with it!

From what I've heard goat's milk can cause the same problems as cow's milk. Have your friend pick up either Baby Matters or The Baby Bond and read the chapter about dairy. That's what helped me understand the dairy sensitivity and really get serious about eliminating dairy. Good luck to her!

Yes, its the cow's milk protein. I've always used the terms interchangeably because (fortunatley) I never had to deal with any of these issues.

I'll let her know about the books, thanks for the advice!
