We're doing Egypt now, and I've been blogging about our activities, books, and Egypt kits.

We especially liked the Pyramid Kit.

I'm in the UK though and haven't found the pyramid kit ( liked the look of that one too!) I did get an egypt kit a little while ago in the charity shop for a pound that lookspromising.

Thanks!

If you can find it at the library or for a decent price somewhere, we have really enjoyed Ancient Egypt (Modern Rhymes About Ancient Times).

Oops, sorry, now I see you listed my blog link!

I was just going through the Usborne Internet-Linked History Encyclopedia last night - all their online links. I see you have http://www.ancientegypt.co.uk/menu.html listed, I loved that site! It also has a site covering Mesopotamia that I loved. It looks like you've got some great Egypt sites listed, I'll have to go through them and if I come with any new ones, I'll let you know.

Here's our Egypt craft books, every now and then we do an activity from one of these:
Ancient Egyptians and their Neighbors (covers Egyptians, Mesopotamians, Nubians and Hittites)
Ancient Israelites and their Neighbors (covers Israelites, Phoenicians and Philistines)
Story of the World 1 Activity Guide
Spend the Day in Ancient Egypt by Linda Honan
Make History Ancient Egypt by Nancy Fister (out of print, we bought used for $1)

I just snagged that Ancient Egypt (Modern Rhymes About Ancient Times) last month for a good priced used, but in new condition.

How old is your son? I'm also studying Ancient Egypt right now and have been reading lots of books.

We did Egypt earlier this year - had a great time! I really looked and looked for a main book that could be a starting point each day for a variety of explorations. We chose:

Explore It! Ancient Egypt

What was so special about it is that it doesn't just cover kings and pyramids. Instead it breezes through the whole culture: myths, the Nile and its cycles, village life, children, farming, food, pyramids, law & order, writing and math, medicine & magic, mummies, art, music, dance, and war & weapons. All in a pop-up and tab-pull book.

Each spread is basic and we used it to get us started - then we did activities from the Kaleidoscpe Kids' Pyramids book (good book, lousy title as it also covers the whole culture) - got that from the library - but any of the very good Egypt craft books would have sufficed. We made a paper/cardboard diorama which we augmented with Egyptian Action Figures from the Ancient Egypt Toob. We also used a few really good websites - here's one.

The only thing I wished for was a better book of the myths than the one I borrowed from the library. There are 4-5 myths well-told in the Explore It book and it might be enough for most people, but with my eldest a friend in Texas had lent me a book of myths for kids that had about 20 stories - about one a day. We had enjoyed acting out a new one each day with the action figures (actually adding in Star Wars and soldier figures). It really brought things to life.

Either way, the Toob of figures and the Explore It book were indispensible!

Warm regards,

Lucie

We love our Ancient Egypt toob! I also got a few Pharaoh guards to add to our collection. My daughter loves to act out stories, so I always try to find her little figures to go along with what we're studying.

I have had Egyptian Myths by Jacqueline Morley from the library and just renewed it. I think it has 13 stories with colorful illustrations. We read it aloud as a family last night. However it is out of print, and the used ones are in demand and a bit expensive, otherwise I'd be adding it to our permanent library.

Our other Egyptian myth read aloud the past month has been Tales of Ancient Egypt. It is more indepth, with 17 chapters.
