I would allow time in between weight lifting, but bodyweight stuff, and cardio type is fine if you're not totally recovered.

Thanks for the replies

I have another discussion topic: How do you lean out on low carb?

I have been able to lean out on lower-fat, higher protein and carb type diets moderate cardio (30-45 minutes) and moderate weight training (8-10 reps).

Doing the higher fat and focuing on weight training is a bad look for me. I have a round face and it is seriously chubby and I want to be more defined (all over) I gain both muscle and fat easily. I used to be an athlete and really into fitness/sports and I want to look and feel like my old self.

Should I go more Garden of Eating style (produce dominated, mod carb) combined with daily cardio intervals? I am definately a protein person so whatever I try I must have my meat! I am also a TFer and want to make sure I get in those fat soluables. I think Sally Fallon talked about if you ate high protein without high fat it was bad for you..depleating of Vitamin A and calcium. Staying healthy and having healthy babies is important to me too.

Sorry for the ramble! I am trying to figure this all out.

Well I'm no expert, but I think that most fitness models go super low carb to "lean out" because you release water, or dehydrate when you break down glycogen.

Today was another slamin' primal day.

IF'd breakfast.
some beef jerky for a late afternoon snack in the car.
Ton's of roast chicken and gravy and BLT salad. I am STUFFED.

Gonna do my push up challenge and hit the sack.

I think it might be individual...figuring out what works best for you. For me, I do best with lots of veggies, some fruits, lots of protein and fat. I eat more protein than fat I think if you add it all up, but that depends on the day. Some days, like today, I ate almost the same exact amount of fat and protein. I think that eating a high fat diet IS tricky. I feel much better if I have my coco oil for fat in the morning but then for the rest of the day it is veggies and meat. Of course I get some more fat throughout the day, but I can't do the coco oil 2-3 times a day, it is just too much for me.

I'm about the same as ryleigh'smama - I cannot do so much fat. I actually tried it for like 3 weeks, and i ended up gaining 2 pounds and feeling miserable. I'm usually pretty "cut" which is the difference between this 2 pounds. It's more of a personal preference than necessity, because I wear the same size but I can tell the difference. It may have come off already but I am not going to weigh myself a couple weeks just to see what naturally happens. I have finally really found my niche with the "low carb" thing. Really for me it's staying away from the grains. I do eat a little quinoa and oats, maybe once a day or twice, but only the first early part of the day. I will have some in my breakfast pancake, and then on hard workout days i'll usually eat a meal bar which has some quinoa in it.

My perfect diet, is basically plant based. I eat loads of veggies, lentils, and lean meats. I DO NOT feel good when I eat fatty meat, bacon, too much coconut oil etc. I am very active, and i LOVE working out by myself and with my kids. I have realized you really have to tailor diets/workouts to yourself. What good is a "diet" even if it's the "rigth" thing to do if you feel miserable? And I know some people stick wtih things and try to wait them out, think maybe they are detoxing, or whatever.....but I try not to look too far in to it and overanalyze. If I do something and don't feel good, I stop doing it .

I'm going ot the gym tonight. Ryleigh'smama I'm gonna do a hard circuit and steel some of your ideas!

ETA: newcastlemama - I know what you mean about the only focusing on weight training and low carb diet, it doesn't work for me either. It's just like WITH weight training though, some will SWEAR 5x5 rep type lifting will make you the strongest, and not grow in size, some say the opposite. I have been lifting a long time, and the ONLY time I have felt I got to an undesireable look, is when i followed the "primal blueprint" to a T. I actually didn't have enough energy for all the things I have always done. Sure I could lift really heavy, but the endurance/stamina went away. AT first I was LOADED wtih energy, but it's just like anything your body adjusts. I am always chanign up my diet/workouts. I do it "on purpose" because I really don't think it' s possible to live truely as people used to. There IS food and fitness all around, so I never know if I am doing something "natural" or trying to force what would BE "natural" for early people, does that make sense? I mix up weight training a lot. HEavy for me is ALOT more than for some, so for some things I have to be careful. I can squat 135 pounds for like 20 reps, so if I were to "lift heavy" that would mean I'd pyramid up to 185, which is just too much weight on my spine. I can feel it, it just doesn't feel good. I usually lift in the 8-12 rep range. With squats I do high reps like 20, and I actually do them LAST because after i do say heavy walking lunges and other things, I don't NEED as much weight for squats/dead lifts because i'm alreayd partially fatigued. So I get the same out of a lower weight. My arms actually got too big. I have a couple snug shirts that literally were hard to put on. I do NOT want bulging biceps! Supersetting arms will keep them "smaller" and really defined without getting big.

I cannot fast, it just is no good for me. Often i end up eating the first time late morning or early lunch, but I just need to snack. one or two big meals is no good for me. I am actually up 3 pounds from last summer, but I don't know if I will end up losing more than 1 pound or so. I like my bigger shoulders and thicker back, so I'm thinking that was mostly muscle. I am kind of speaking of the past a little, because I figure this out 2 weeks ago and have been eating more carbs and working out more again, and I have alreayd noticed a difference. My legs are tighter I think. SO if I weigh myself in a couple weeks and i'm still the same weight, so be it . I feel good and think I look good for me.

End of my rambling LOL

wait one more thing, ryleighsmama since i know we are about the same, do you mind if i ask you how much you weigh? I'm 5'5" i thought you were abou the same? I'm at 128/9 right now, up from 125/126 but i probably lost 1 pound of it.
THANK YOU MAMAS!!! YOUR POSTS WERE SO HELPFUL!

With the low carb thing it seems the answer to any problem is "raise the fat". I just thought that I must be doing something wrong but I think it just is not a good fit for me. But I think I need a produce heavy/grain-free, high protein and add a little fat type thing...I am going to try that out.

I do pooorly on a primal/weights dominant excerise type thing too. I need lots of cardio (not marathon runnning but more than some long walks and a couple sprints) Like soccer and basketball type cardio. I do well in the 8-10 rep range for weight stuff. Plus I like how that type of excerise feels. When I tried really heavy weights it hurt my bones/joints too.

I am like you lisamarie...I really love that active lifestyle....I just lost all of that since PPD and kids 5 years ago. I was so into sports, hiking, running, capming, weights ect and then I had kids and felt like I should be doing more motherly things! It is so silly but I felt like I had to become someone else to be a good mother. (Sorry if this is turing into a therapy session, but I thought it could help someone else. I think since I am about to turn 30 this is all coming up for me right now) Dh and I actually dated by doing all that sporty stuff instead of dinners out. I think that is why he proposed so fast I think that is why even though I ate not so awesome I was able to stay pretty happy despite my nutrient defiencies--all the sunshine and excerise.

I am not sure if fasting will be good for me either. I am into not eating until I am hungry though. I am a 3 meals a day type person. I don't like the other end of eating 6 small meals a day either....I want to do something besides eat all day!!

Thanks so much
Jen

that's awesome newcastlmama - sounds like you kinda maybe are/was maybe where I've been. I TOTALLY know what you mean about becoming a different person in order to be a mom, I wish I would have known that it doesn't have to be that way BEFORE i gave things up LOL. My kids are actually happier and so well adjusted seeing their mama happy, fit and strong. And sounds like you already know what works best for you, so then that would be the best thing! I stopped worrying about what I feel "should" be better based on someone else's theory. I"m healthy happy and call me vein I like looking fit

Of course you can ask! I was 132 lbs the last time I weighed (about 3 weeks ago). I was mad to go up in weight. I spent most of my summer at 127-129 lbs last year. I feel the same way as you really though. I have been focusing on 125lbs but if I stop weighing and just look at myself I am happy, I know that a lot of the "gain" from the summer was becoming tighter, and stronger. I think I will lean out a bit as it gets warmer too. I love to be outside, so I naturally am more active when I can do that a lot. I still go to the gym, but on top of that we are constantly at the park, lake, hiking, etc.

I am gravitating more toward a plant based diet right now too. Although I do feel best without grains, so I haven't had any in quite some time. I do make an exception for a really good birthday cake...cause life's short.
Wow thanks. We are like totally the same LOL. I think I'm over the ever being 125 but I will most likely get super super lean in the summer as usual. 2 or 3 pounds is a huge difference to me. ALL the fat on me goes to my butt/legs, and it's the difference between having slightly smaller thighs, and the better definition between my shoulders and triceps/biceps. like i said though i got all my energy back and then some when I quit trying to be SO "primal." I DID want to get some thickness to my back, and I think i accomplished that, so I may have gained a small amount of muscle weight. I weighed again today and i'm definately up to 129, which is a well fitting size 2 for me. I don't think i care so much about the weight but I do want the extra definition in my thighs.

I had a good workout, just did arms/abs and uphill walking, then stairs. I'm planning on relaxing for the weekend, DH is going out of town so I'll have a very b usy week
post #51 of 171
Thanks for sharing too! It makes me feel better to hear someone feeling the same way I do. I can tell that I am leaner in my stomach, my muscle definition is much better. I also know that I will lose a few pounds this summer. My appetite seems to change in warmer weather. I suppose if I got back down to 129 I'd probably fit in a size 2. I ordered two pairs of size 4 pants the other day. They came, I tried one pair on and they fit perfectly, tried the other pair on and I had to SQUEEZE them up over my butt, they were super tight in the thighs, and I could BARELY button them (but I could button them). I took them off, looked at the tag (I ordered a four, so I assumed they were a 4 and hadn't looked)....they were a size 1. Now, I could never wear them, I could barely breathe in them...but I could button them. It's the little things.

LOL yeah you can't WEAR a size 1 AND have booty LOL, but I know what you mean. I can still button a 0, but i would have to keep pulling them up to not pinch the top of me and look liek a muffin top thing. It's' funny how things resonate....I remember in one post you said you think "your bones fit in a size 4" i think that's teh same with me. I wear a size 2, it's well fitting and sometimes loose, but a size 0 never has enough rise to cover a butt. Wether I am 2 or 3 pounds up or down, my hips are still going to have the same bones the same inches apart, and they seem to fit in a 2.

hey guys,
I loved reading everyone's post and will likely forget something but you guys are good motivation.

I am thinking that I am likely just about the same size I have been for the past month. Most days I feel great but sometimes I get aggravated. I have been doing good eating wise. LC for the large part and whole foods. I did have about a 18 hr higher carb eating but I also gave blood on an empty tummy and the only safe snacks they had were high carb and I needed something so I didn't pass out.

I think perhaps unless I really go super low carbs and totally kill myself working out this is my size right now. I tried going super lc again though and it is not working for me personally. However, at the level I am at I feel great energy wise and my mood is absolutely fantastic. Like over the top happy. That tells me I need to listen to my body. I am working out , but on my terms and when I want. Challenging myself but I refuse to do an hr on just working out a day. Not that I am inactive. We play outside and as the weather warms work outside more and more.

I am hoping like you ladies I lean out a bit this summer. But I also hope that I keep this great mood.

Wat to go crunchy mama - Sounds like you are doing awesome. You are so newly post pardum yet. Sounds like you've got a nice figure and healthy, working out etc, and any small imperfections that bug you will go away since you are doing everything right and of course it takes longer than a few months to totally get back from having a baby. You have such a good mood probably because you are not trying to kill yourself LC and workout to the point of misery. TRUST ME , I am around fitness competitors often, and they are HUNGRY. It's no fun being hungry and mentally starved. I never did a competition but I got ready for one just to see if I could. Well, I could, I did, and I was in a serious brain fog for a couple weeks probably from being starved LOL. All those "fitness models" look perfect in the "off" season, because they are fit and figurely while maintaining enough bodyfat to be HEALTHY. When they start dropping to unnatural levels is when they get grumpy and hungry. The only time I get that way is in the summer, when it happens naturally, because I am constantly on the go and busy, never indoors

lisamarie as always thanks for the encouragement and kind thoughts and words! I am trying hard to be accepting of myself and loving toward my body.
It sounds like you are doing a great job crunchy mama!! I can't believe how dedicated you are. I took a 6 month break from caring at all after having my ds. Maybe that's why it took 2.5 years to get back in shape! Anyway, you are inspiring, and you are doing a great job of listening to what your body needs and focusing on being healthy...which is most important.

I have had two good days of eating. I am focused right now on eating to make me feel good. I have had a bit more fruit, because we were out of town over the weekend and got some yummy locally grown oranges.

I took my dd off dairy yesterday (she has HUGE tonsils, which pedi said was no big deal a year ago, but recently started sleep apnea...so we're trying no dairy) and it has been okay. I was expecting worse. She likes rice milk, hates almond milk. She likes having different food right now. Amazingly, in the 30ish hours since no dairy her right tonsil has gone down in half. I also started her on a lymph cleanse...so maybe that helped. She did eat A LOT of dairy though, loves cheese, butter, cheesy stuff, ice cream, yogurt, etc. So I guess just a short time could have good results. I am trying to avoid having tonsils and adenoids out. I started with dairy from a gut feeling... so if that isn't it or if it seems like there is something else we'll try wheat/gluten too.

Thanks for listening to my off topic story!

Had a great workout today. Going to my mom and dad's for dinner with the fam, can't wait!
that is SO great ryleighsmama - We really limit dairy for the kids now, they eat yogurt and a little cheese.

I have been feeling really awesome. I have had a couple weeks of really good workouts, everyone feeling healthy, and just super busy. Yesterday I did back/chest at the gym, and my chest muscles actually are sore, which is a good sign because I really worked it hard. Tomorrow i'll go do legs, shoulders, and arms, and then friday i'll probably do a circuit. I seriously havae NO boobs, forgive the crass-ness this will sound but I feel like they are saggy skin bags that need re-inflating LOL. HOwever, with a lined/shaping bra and pec muscles it makes me feel a bit more feminine.

Totally off topic, but with losing this amoutn of weight, nursing for years straight, I have actually entertained the though of having them restored
post #58 of 171
Lisa- I seriously have the same issue! If I have on a nice padded bra and clothes I look good. Remove bra and clothes....boobs have no semblance of perkiness anymore. I have entertained the idea of doing "something" to them. The problem I have is, I don't want implants, I don't like having big boobs...if I do anything I would just have them lifted. They'd be small, but perky.

My workout today was: abs and glutes/legs in gym for about 25-30 min. Then a nice long hike up a ton of hills in the sunshine. I loved it!

Had dinner at my parent's house for my bday. They made sauteed shrimp, tri-tip, salad, asparagus, and other stuff like bread and potatoes too...but I just ate the shrimp, tri-tip, salad and asparagus. YUMMY! Then we had banana splits for dessert. It was fantastic! The banana split was carby...but come on, you only have one birthday a year right!
Funny, my kids have been begging for banana splits daily LOL. It is one of the desserts I don't mind. I started making chocolate sauce from coconut milk, cocoa powder, honey/stevia mix. It's really good! How nice to have dinner with your parents for your bday

Yeah, I don't want big boobs either. It's really annoying. I actually get marks from bras digging in, because i feel like i need the underwire type to give me some shape. My sister has implants, she is HUGE. Though she has big hips and very curvy so it fits. But if she lost weight, she'd be all boobs.

Sounds like a good workout. Tomorrow is legs (I mainly focus on the butt) and shoulders. I am really working on my chest/shoulder muscles right now because as I explained about the lack of boobs....i like having the extra "lift" from the pec muscles

I made a huge vegetarian curry, it's super yummy and I shared with a couple friends. I feel like I need some new grabby type of snacks for the kids.

BROKE THROUGH MY PLATEAU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm so happy. I really needed to get my head on straight and stop the endless sugar cycle, well having a wicked cold seems to have done it for me!

Down 5 lbs, eating lots of protein, tons of coconut milk and veggies and some fruit. Sigh, I feel so good even though I'm super ill. Weird huh?

And to jump in on the boob discussion

I booked my consultation for breast augmentation today. Dec 3rd, so I want to be ripped by then, like in the best shape possible. I weigh 155 lbs today, and want to be down to 125 lbs by then. Definitely do-able, if I continue eating well and up the workouts.
