How to get a toddler to sleep w/o nursing?

DD is turning 2 and is night-weaned for part of the night. Unfortunately (for us) this did not lead to sleeping through the night, but she does have longer sleep stretches.

Now we'd like to transition to her falling asleep without nursing. No clue how to manage this. Our evening routine is dinner, bath, story, nursing/rocking with quiet music. She will occasionally ask to lie down in her crib after nursing for a while. She'll lay down for a minute (wants me to sit next to the crib) and then she'll stand up and really isn't capable of getting sleepy/falling asleep by herself. She'll then ask to come back to my lap and then nurse til she's asleep.

Any advice on how to transition to self-putter-to-sleeper?
Thanks!

We are still working on having ds actually lay & down & fall asleep on his own but he is no longer nursing to sleep. I nurse him downstairs & then dh takes him upstairs, reads a book & then firmly holds him still until he falls asleep. Ds is a serious sleep fighter & if we let him loose he just is up & down & all over the place & will never fall asleep (when he is serious exhausted he will come to us to have us hold him to sleep but we try to not let him get that tired).

As he is understanding more & more we plan to change to dh just lying beside him & eventually having him lie on his own - but that's probably a few months away.
