Radical Children

Will be on discovery health, the preview had parent's saying that they "decided to raise their children in a gender neutral environment". Which I think is totally awesome. I just hope the show goes well.

Yeah, it was called Radical Parenting.

What did everyone think? I watched it with my parents

I personally have some hangups on unschooling, and I feel like they definitely made a point to not necessarily show the best example of unschooling. The mom made reference to video games a few times, whereas what I've gotten from here shows that many unschooling parents make a point to avoid non-educational tv/video games and make a point to read, build things, go outside, etc. As a whole though, I liked the family and it made me reconsider some of my hangups.

I loved the attachment parents! I also loved how the only "cons" were that wearing the baby doesn't allow him to crawl (but mainstream babies being in a swing or bouncer does?) and extended nursing might make kids feel bad because they're "different." I absolutely loved that the father was so involved. Other than the EC and placenta thing, my mom loved this section. I, of course, already knew all of it I liked that the older kids were so happy and "normal." It really shows that APing your kids isn't going to leave them totally screwed up and unable to function in real life, like some people think.

I think I loved the last family, the gender neutral ones, the most. The scene with the boy with the baby doll and breast pump was just precious. I didn't find them extreme at all, and I think that those parents are setting their kids up to be fantastic men. I loved the dad!

I was hoping someone would be taking about the show today I really enjoyed it. (In general, I like how Discovery Health kind of "normalizes" things that many people view as abnormal. Their previews play on the shock factor, but the shows generally take a thoughtful and respectful approach towards families that are seen as different For instance, I hope that the recent episode of "Adoption Stories," featuring a gay couple and their two adopted sons, made anti-gay-adoption viewers reconsider their attitudes.)

I loved the attachment parenting family, too. They seemed really close and content, and there was no condescension in the way they talked about their lifestyle. The dad said: "Attachment parenting isn't for everyone, but it works for us"--liked that!

Our parenting philosophy is vastly different from that of the unschooling family they featured, but it was an interesting segment and it led to a nice conversation with my husband about how we want our daughter to learn as she gets older.

I will be interviewing the expert, that was on Radical Parenting, in response to her participation in the show, so if you have any questions for her please let me know. You can email me homeschooling@suite101.com or reply on my Facebook group

I just watched the show and enjoyed it, although I didn't see anything really "radical" about it. You guys must have successfully converted me.

Like some PPs mentioned, of the families featured, I related least to the unschoolers. It wasn't so much anything they said -- they seemed very thoughtful and like they've done a lot of research and decided that that's the best parenting philosophy for them. It was more the way the mom seemed to have a very practiced, forced-neutral way of saying "Okay" to everything her kids said. The whole eyebrows raised, lids half-shut, almost-bored, "Oh, okay" response to everything, like she was thinking, "This is a neutral response. There is no judgment in what I'm saying." Although, I'm sure I would sound odd too if I had a film crew in the room and I knew people were going to pick apart my parenting style.

Did the AP family say how old their youngest baby was? He was so cute sleeping on his daddy's back in the kitchen.

I couldn't find it on Hulu, but according to Discovery Health's website, it's going to air again on 3/23, at 8pm and 11pm.
