CD Numbers and Quantity Help Please

Hey Ladies,

I spent the whole weekend wracking my brain with articles, reviews, and websites to inform myself with this whole CD thing (hey look, I now know what CD is!!!). It's a novel idea among not only my friends but family members as well. Seems my decision was pretty much the talk around my grandpa's birthday party table this weekend, which I was unable to attend (but my ears were ringing). Anyhoo... I want to make it as simple as possible and have narrowed my manufacturers, but I NEED HELP!!!!

I understand I don't need as many covers as I have doublers and liners, and I need about 36 at the beginning, but I can't seem to calculate the "magic" number for each of these. It's driving my analytic, OCD personality over the cliff. Hopefully that's where you come in!!

Ok, so here's what I'm thinking:

5-12 lbs Rumparooz Lil' Joey AIO (QTY 6)
4-16 lbs Happy Heinys Mini One size (QTY 4) comes with 2 inserts
8-35 lbs Gro Baby AI2 (pkg: 4 shells/8 soakers/8 boosters)
6-40 lbs Knickernappies (pkg: 6 shells/12 Loopy Do inserts)

BUT:
1. How many "extra" GB soakers, GB boosters, KN Loopy Do inserrts, HH inserts do I need?

2. Do I need to plan on some fleece liners/ disposable liners? How many? (new mom/dad here, so the idea of poo handling and keeping a dry bottom stress us a little) If not, what else do I need to take in consideration?

3.Is this overkill, or do I need more covers/sets?

4. What do you do with the large inserts at the beginning? KN come with a small and large Loopy Do...so can I use it with a new born or do I wait?

5. When it comes to doublers/boosters when will I be using these? I'm assuming it's for car rides, nighttime, and heavy wetters? Yes?

6. This wet bag thing...How many do I need and how many diapers do they hold? Do I need one for inserts/doublers and one for covers when traveling? Or are these things just for day trips?

That's my preliminary freak-out list of questions. Any advice is appreciated, I'm also absorbing the boards so thread suggestions are welcome too.

Thanks in advance.

I don't know about all the different brands of diapers, so I'm just throwing things out there...do the larger one-size diapers fit newborns well (grobaby and knickernappies)? If you aren't sure, that would be important to find out. Some one-size don't fit well until the baby fills out a bit.

I would not buy any more HH inserts unless you buy more diapers. It doesn't look like you use the shell again and just change the insert. So more inserts wouldn't prolong the life of the diaper before washing. So figure out what diaper fits newborns best and focus on more of those (whether it be inserts or diaper/shells).

I don't think liners are necessary. Most of the newer diapers have comfortable material against the baby so fleece would probably be unnecessary. Little baby poop isn't a big deal, especially if you nurse. You just toss it in the washer and it comes out in the pre-rinse, then you just wash like normal. It might be handy to have some if you ever need to use diaper cream and aren't sure if the kind you have is CD-friendly (though you could always research it and buy a kind that is).

I don't think it's overkill (you can never have enough diapers!), but I'd be doing more prefolds and covers for a newborn personally, since diapers are so expensive and they are in them for only a short time. The "easy" ones are nice for out and about and middle of the night changes, but have you considered prefolds as a back up just to make sure you have enough? They are also great burp cloths and doublers so it's not like you won't use them once they are outgrown. You really can't go wrong with them.

Large inserts...if they are made of hemp or cotton or bamboo, you could use them as burp cloths (provided they are wide enough, like tri-folds). Don't use anything microfiber against baby's skin. If you can't use them, just put them up until the baby is bigger and don't lose them!

Yes, you'll use boosters anytime you think baby will leak out with just one insert. You'll learn your baby's personal wetting patterns pretty quickly. With my kids, I only have to use them overnight. Naps and car rides weren't a problem. Some kids need a doubler in every diaper. It just depends on the kid.

I like to have 3 wet bags. 1 small one for quick trips, 1 large one for your wash, and one medium for longer day trips or overnights, plus as a back-up to hold dirties while your large one is in the wash. I also have a kitty litter pail for a diaper pail. It's nice to hold the really nasty ones until wash day because it closes nice and tight and it's not pricey (ask friends and family for one if you don't buy litter yourself).

Hmm, well I think the only one where you can reuse the cover with a new insert is the GroBaby. The rest I'd just count as 1 for the purpose of your diaper stash since once the AIO/pocket is wet, you can't reuse it.

For the doublers/larger inserts it depends on the baby - they normally wet frequently/not as much at the beginning, and then less often but more at once later. Plus the smaller inserts help make the diaper less bulky on a little one.

Also, I second the question whether Kickernappies and GroBaby can be used/will be bulky (if that would bother you) on a newborn.

I think you need some preemie prefolds and a set of NB/S PUL covers, like thirsties/imse vimse/bummis for the first month or two, most of those dipes----altho they say 6-40 lbs will be huge on a newborn. The mini pockets are great and the small aios should be great too, but Id get a dz preemie pfs and 4 PUL covers in sz XS.

First of all, I'm only counting 24 diapers, not the 36 you said you were planning on.

1. How many "extra" GB soakers, GB boosters, KN Loopy Do inserrts, HH inserts do I need?

For pocket dipes, you need 1 insert per shell, minimum. If you have a super pee-er you may wind up using 2 inserts at once, or an insert and a doubler. But you need at least 1 per. However, you cannot reuse that shell once it's wet. The extras are just for more absorbency, so you can't count 2 inserts for a pocket dipe as 2 dipes, it's still just 1 dipe. For fitteds or AIOs, they should come with everything you need, no inserts required. For the AI2, those inserts make a whole new diaper, so as many as you want.

2. Do I need to plan on some fleece liners/ disposable liners? How many? (new mom/dad here, so the idea of poo handling and keeping a dry bottom stress us a little) If not, what else do I need to take in consideration?

I didn't get fleece liners until my little guy was about 3 mos old, and I still rarely use them. Disposable liners don't really serve any purpose before the baby starts solids. It also looks like your dipes are mostly synthetics, so you may not need fleece liners at all.

3.Is this overkill, or do I need more covers/sets?

You definitely need more. Like a pp mentioned, you can't assume that OS dipes will fit a NB. You may also find that the particular brands you chose don't work for you (my little guy has a skinny tummy and chubby thighs, so we have trouble fitting many dipes).

4. What do you do with the large inserts at the beginning? KN come with a small and large Loopy Do...so can I use it with a new born or do I wait?

Probably just put it aside until the baby is a bit bigger, or peeing more.

5. When it comes to doublers/boosters when will I be using these? I'm assuming it's for car rides, nighttime, and heavy wetters? Yes?

Doublers depend on the kid and the diaper. I have some dipes that never need doublers, and some that require a doubler if I want to go more than half an hour between changes. And not all doublers are the same. I have some daytime weight doublers and some night-time. Car rides and night-time I use a heavier dipe, rather than stuffing with doublers. I know some of my dipes will only hold 1 pee (30-60 minutes), some will hold him for 2-3 hours, and some will hold him for 6, so I choose the dipe depending on the situation.

6. This wet bag thing...How many do I need and how many diapers do they hold? Do I need one for inserts/doublers and one for covers when traveling? Or are these things just for day trips?

I have 1 wet bag for the diaper bag. In the house I don't use a bag, I use a diaper pail and I have a dedicated laundry basket. How many they hold depends on the bag... some will only hold 2 or 3, some will hold 20. Most sellers will tell you approx how many dipes it will hold.

I would definitely have a fall back plan for the first few weeks in case your OS dipes don't fit. Whether that's buying some used NB fitteds and covers, or picking up a dozen infant PFs and a couple covers.

To me, it looks overkill. You have different styles and different brands; many people find they really like one kind. Why not try a few used and the figure out works for your baby's age and shape. I bought two kinds used for my new babe, some all cotton all-in-ones and some sized fuzzi bunz, within two weeks I realized I loved the fuzzi bunz and the all-in-ones were a pain because I didn't like the fit and they took forever to dry. I sold the all-in-ones, bought more used fuzzi bunz, and some extra inserts, and then went from there. I also gave away all my gdiapers which I had loved with my first-- cloth was just easier.

I really like having one kind of diaper that I can make small adjustments to if I need to... (thicker insert for nap, etc.)

My point is that I didn't know what I would like or what would work well for my wash cycle or etc... Don't try and build the perfect stash before you have any experience.

See, and I like having different kinds...

Right now we use Loveybums and Dream-Eze and Sugar Plum Babies for daytime wear. The Dream-Eze will hold him for 2-3 hours, but the others will only last maybe 90 minutes, so I pick based on whether we're leaving the house or not. If I want to go cover-less, then I put him in a Disana tie, and for long car trips I'll put him in a Goodmama or a SB-ish. For night-time I have about 5 different brands to choose from depending on what kind of night it's shaping up to be. And while I'd like a few more of a couple different brands, I don't love any particular brand so much that I'd want my entire stash made up of it.

I think it is useful to have some of different kinds, because I found that when my kiddos went through a growth spurt, one diaper might fit better for a while, and then another one would..

I think you're safe with the gro baby stash. Personally though, I found they didn't fit my son until he was over a month. They were really bulky in the earlier ages. I also found he grew into the unsnaped rise at 7 months. I ended up switching to a different brand. But my son is also really really long (12-18 month clothing at 7 months) and skinny so that brand fit him oddly.
