Birth certificate?

Have you gotten your baby's birth certificate yet? And if you are in the USA, have you received the social security card? Marissa is 4.5 weeks now, and we still don't have either of ours.

Update: I called the hospital and their birth registry department had not yet released all the information to the state, so that is why the delay for us! Hopefully we will get it in the mail soon so DH can add her on our insurance!

Social Security Card - yes, last week
Birth Certificate - not yet, but we were given a number to call to go pick one up in person if we want it expedited

Your child should be automatically covered. I didn't need either SSN or BC. The day after my son was born I called my HMO and he was automatically covered under my insurance for the first 30 days. During that time I worked it all out with my employer. My son was not born at a hospital covered by my HMO, and his mom was covered under Medi-Cal through the birth (we aren't married) so for me, if anything, the whole process should have been more difficult. But, now Jaesun has his own insurance card and it all got sorted smoothly. All I really needed to use was a phone. No one asked me for SS# or anything beyond his name and DOB. You should definitely not be waiting around for paperwork to get the insurance ball rolling. Pick up the phone already and make the calls.

We got the SSN about at about three weeks...and have to send in a form and $15 for the BC.

Now we need to set up his 529 and start making deposits.

got ss card last week--wasn't even 2 weeks. b/c we have to pick up--$25 per copy here

Nope. But I had to file a petition through probate court because I don't have any medical proof I gave birth (no paramedic report, no hospital transfer to cut the cord)

Then I have to go through Vital statistics and then I can go to SS to get a number. All because I had a UC.

havent even recieved the form in the mail yet.

We just received her social security card (she is 6 weeks) and we didn't order a copy of her birth certificate.

We received notice that the birth has been recorded at just shy of two weeks. Which was exciting because it also indicated they didn't contest putting my partner's name on the birth certificate. Now we need to order and pay for a copy for our files. Nothing from Social Security yet.

Received his ssn when he was 7 weeks old, I believe. BC is ready. I won't bother picking it up. Too much of a hassle. I'll just use vitalchek.

There is a page on the ssa site that tells you how long you should expect it to process. I found this when I realized we needed DS's SSN to file taxes.

we have both of ours, and tomorrow going in to apply for a passport for him! (we're going to New Zealand in a few weeks, he'll need it!)

We UC'ed, but we had everything in order and filled out all the requested forms and applications right away. Got our BC at about 3 wks and SS at 5. I am always really glad when it all goes smoothly and quickly.

We are US citizens in China. We UC'd. Skipped getting the Chinese BC altogether and went straight to our consulate with a host of documents, photographs, testimonies, even a movie of the birth to prove that she's ours. They interviewed us and granted the CBRA (Certificate of Birth Reported Abroad) without much ado. It was actually easier than our first homebirth (midwife attended) in the US. Then we picked up her passport a couple of weeks later. Went to the local police station here where they decided not to fine us for being a few days late (you're supposed to have your visa/passport done within a month of birth - which is almost impossible even with the quickest action) because they thought our kids were cute (wide latitude given to police officers here!). Then got our visa. No problem there either. Phew! We are SUPER relieved all went well.

As for SS Card, hers is routed through a US Embassy in Asia, and it takes 6 months. So nothing yet.

haven't sent the paperwork in yet

ddc crashing to say that most social security cards and birth certs (at least here in CA) take about 3 months to get. And they dont mail them here, I had to go to the county office to get them. Unless something changed in the last 2 yrs I expect to do the same this time around too.

He informed HR right away of her birth so that she could be added on the health insurance. I did not word that very well. We have even been to the ped twice and she has been covered. But they want the SSN asap for their records, and to add her as a beneficiary to his life insurance offered through work.

we got his social security card within two weeks of his birth. for his birth certificate, i had to go to the town hall and purchase one, they don't automatically send it.

for the insurance thing - everyone double and triple check their policy and what they need to do to get added to the insurance. the insurance i have required that we fax a copy of the birth certificate within 30 days of the birth or the babe would not be added. i didn't need his SSNO, but they had a no exceptions policy on the birth certificate.
