BLW-DD choked badly- Anyone else have issues? What do you do now?

DD is 7 months old and really loved BLW. She made a huge mess but was really happy and did fine for a few weeks with her zuchini, sweet potato, avocado, apple, pear etc. Until yesterday. Yesterday- she choked on a piece of avocado (second BLW avocado issue in a week on MDC) within 5 minutes of DH seeing her eating solids for the first time. I was so happy to share the moment with him and her happiness.... until he had to perform a baby heimlich. She couldn't breath. I know the book says this is super rare but DH is seriously freaked out and has decreed "only purees " from now on. He was kind of freaked by the BLW concept from the beginning because in Italy they consider this type of thing dangerous.

Anyway-has this happened to others out there?
Did you change your feeding process afterwards? And if so, how did your LO adjust?
We kind of did baby led purees yesterday after the incident but it seemed way less fun for DD and I think she ended up eating alot less too. (I loaded the spoon and then gave it to her-we went through 8 spoons!)

Thanks for your input!

Oh s: mama that must have been so scary!

DD has not choked on anything, though she's gagged up bits of apple a few times. I was also sketched out by avocados bc they are so slippery. I ended up chewing them and giving her the mush to play with.

Anyhow, can you give her the puree on a plate so she can finger feed herself, even without the spoon? Like squishing her hands in and stuff? Because that seems to be how soft finger foods end up anyway. (I'm thinking sweet potatoes etc)

That said, I was under the impression that even if you do purees, finger foods come in around 7/8/9 months?

My ds choked once but it was because my dh had not cut the mango small enough.

Could you use a mesh feeder? I loved those when my ds was a baby. He could still play with the food and feed himself but only suck out little chunks. I used it for firm fruits/veg as well as mushy things that were hard to pick up.

Thank you for your empathy cyclamen and strawberry fields- yes it was a scary moment. Even more in retrospect as we kept plyaing it over and over in our heads. Plus its so crazy that it happened minutes into the first time DD and I were proudly showing off to DH how well she is eating now!

I will hit my books again and check out the fingr food intro to discuss with DH.

Strawberry Fields- do you know how to get a BPA free mesh feeder? I haven't been able to find one.

I checked with my midwives re: BPA while I was pregnant and they reassured me that BPA can only be leached out of plastic if the plastic is heated. The heat can be indirect, like hot tea in a nalgene bottle, but that the plastic must be heated. I'm sure I'll get flamed for this, but that gave me enough confidence to let my LO use a mesh feeder even if it isn't BPA-free. Even if there is still a slight risk, everything else I can think of is BPA free (maybe not the exersaucer) so this one thing that is very likely not hurting her is not going to worry me.

That being said, if you find a BPA-free feeder, please post a link!

And after the first few tries, she kept her mouth on ONLY the mesh part where the food was coming out anyway, lol.

Oh, and I usually use the feeders to put in frozen cubes of avacado, so it makes her teeth/gums feel better, cuts down on mess, and makes her day. Win/Win/Win

I just found one myself! I had looked for these before with no luck but here they are BPA and phalate free!

I understand that BPA can also leach out with acidic foods, ex. canned tomatoes. Thanks for the teething tip, dislocator!

I used the ones by Munchkin, and they are labeled bpa free. I think they are sold at Target?

How frightening! Just curious -- was your daughter chewing her foods pretty well at this stage? How big was the piece that she choked on?

We had this happen, twice, with DS. Having too much in his mouth was the culprit one time, the other time was just the size/shape of the food. I did not change the fact that I we were doing BLW (mostly, we do do some purees, but because he needs more calories than he can get into himself in a reasonable time doing it himself). What I did change was how much I gave him at once and what size the peices were. He will stuff EVERYTHING into his mouth if I put it all in front of him, so I give him small peices and only a few at a time. When he's successfully eaten it all I give him more.
