kids sharing mattress - how does it work?

If your crawlers or toddlers share a mattress on the floor as their bed, how do you get everyone to sleep instead of play or pester each other? I am trying to decide on our sleeping arrangements, so would appreciate any explanation of how this works at bedtime and naptime. Thanks!

I lay with my kids to get them to sleep. (Have since birth) Granted I sleep with them after I come to bed, but I get them to sleep and then leave them sleeping till I am ready to go to bed a couple hours later.
