Booger eating benificial???

Ok gross I know but I remember eating boogers as a kid, why I have no idea I never thought to stick my fingers in any other oriface and taste it why my nose?

My 4 kids all are sick with cold and I have said "STOP EATING YOUR BOOGERS" so many times it's crazy. So, I was wondering is there an evolutionary reason for this? Buliding immune system? Something?
every child I know was a booger eater so is it just my neck of the woods or are there other booger eaters out there?

ok I should have googled it first read this "According to Austrian lung specialist Dr. Friedrich Bischinger, picking your nose and eating what you find is one of the best (and most inexpensive) ways of staying healthy" taken from this site http://www.associatedcontent.com/art...gereating.html

Just curious to know if it's an instinct thing or just a gross habit all kids have?

There is an Australian lung specialist, can't remember his name, who thinks that eating bogeys boosts the immune system since it is ingesting the trapped/weakened/attacked bacteria your nose has filtered out of your breathed air. There is also a book called "why eating bogeys is good for you" by Mitchell Symons, which various childless people keep threatening to send my DD. Bring it on i say, she's doing it anyway!

Dr. Oz mentioned it on his show once. He said that eating boogers isn't bad for you (blech!), but that picking your nose IS bad for you. It damages the lining, which can then let other ickies in a lot easier- or something like that.

That's just plain gross!

Okay. That's gross.

I may or may not recall doing this as a child.

There must be a reason for it. I am willing to chalk it up to immune system support and NOT THINK ABOUT IT EVER AGAIN.

It's a good way to get a cold...but I suppose that does boost the immune system. Putting fingers in mouth (not nose, but mouth) is how my kid got a nasty parasite that was anything but good for his immune system (damaged it severely as that's part of what this nasty bug does). So...not a great thing in my mind to eat them as you're eating whatever else is lurking on that hand.

I liked it as a kid 'cause it's salty

I agree. Just my two cents, I think it's probably something humans have done for a long time. DD is 2yo and discovering that her fingers fit in her nose. I have a nose ring so there is a bit more attention given to my nose at times. Not sure if that really makes a difference.

I've always heard it boosts your immunity if you don't irritate the inside of your nose.

Plus, it makes you happy, which boosts your immunity too !

Ha, Ha! I wonder what you moderators are thinking when you open this type of thread!

This is cracking me up!
To the OP, are you wanting condolences for your kids to eat their boogers? Just imagine your kids as teenagers eating them in public and they tell their friend go ahead eat yours, it is good for you!

Maybe it is better that they eat them instead of wiping them on the furniture.

My son figured a way to get the immune boost without irritating the inside of the nose- Just suck the snot running down his upper lip before mom wipes it. There has got to be some good in just plain snot right?
