bilateal cookie bite sensori-neural hearing loss

Hello,

My older son who just turne six in Feb. seems to have bilateral cookie bite sensori-neural hearing loss. Since the initial testing in early Jan he has had two ear infections which have postponed the final diagnosis of the permanant loss.

We saw an ENT last week who said both ears have fluid. He still had antibiotics in his system at that point. ENT reccomended a 30 day observation time to see if he gets infected again.

We see the audiologist again on 3/17 and I am hoping his ears will be clear so we can get the levels of his hearing loss and move forward with hearing aids which is what the audiologist told me she would reccomend.

I understand this is a difficult type of hearing loss to accomodate with HA.

Does anyone have any experience with this?

Thanks,

Alison

My son has hearing loss, but his is conductive and is a "reverse ski slope" http://www.hearinglosshelp.com/artic...ringlosses.htm So very different than your son's.

Do you know what level of loss he has? How many decibels at what frequency? For example, Connor's loss is about 30dB at frequencies 250, 500, and 1000, then 20-25 dB at all the rest of the frequencies. Because of the nature of his loss (plus some structural issues) he doesn't wear aids (they can't be programmed for those frequencies very well).

There are some other kiddos on here with hearing loss, maybe they'll be able to help more. Since Connor doesn't wear aids, and his loss is conductive, everything I know won't help you!

BTW, about the fluid...has anyone suggested a course or two of decongestants? Also chiro can often help with fluid. Also food allergies are a common cause of fluid like that, dairy seems to be a biggie. If none of that works, then tubes can be helpful, but I'd recommend trying the others first if possible.

I'm not sure which type of ABR my son has, I just know it is "absent" or something like that. He has Auditory Neuropathy-OAEs present but ABR not. His is sensorineural as well but has to wear cochlear implants for his type/severity of loss.
