Yerba Mate and Tea

Hello all,

I enjoy drinking Yerba Mate, both for the taste and the health benefits, but I am trying to get a read on safety during pregnancy. I have read tons of stuff online but now am just wondering if anyone out there is also a Yerba Mate drinker, and if so, whether or not you drank it in pregnancy. I am 5 months pregnant and love to drink tea, but it seems like every single tea there is has some kind of contraindication somewhere for pregnant women (even if it's decaf or low-caf, as all my teas are), so I am getting a little frustrated! Please let me know your own experience.

Thank you!

If you are just a serious tea drinker and it's the experience not the rush that Yerba Mate tends to give, you should try to pick a new favorite while your preggs. Having a cup or two a week won't harm your little peanut. But if you can you should just try to cut it out right now especially at five months. I had the same issue, I finally got so sick of all the back and forth about the harm that I just got over it one day and said to myself it is 9-months and called to the will power gods to just walk away from it all. The tea I drank the last 7-months of my preagancy was the yogi mother to be. Hope this helps, but I know we are all different and whatever you choose I am sure it is best!

my midwife is also an ND, she said mate is not safe during pregnancy. i have a small cup of black or green tea every other morning or so. personally, i think the antioxidants in tea are very beneficial during pregnancy when we take sooo many supplements. hth

I've been drinking mate for 10 years, including during pregnancy! During the first trimester this round I didn't drink it as much due to horrible morning sickness. In places where people drink it every day as part of their culture, pregnant women still drink it.

If you are worried about it, I'd cut back.
