ok I have a question.

Law here states that a child has to be accounted for in school from 6 to 16.

if my son was going to go to school -- he would be in kindy in 2011 ..

in he birthday in Nov

so he would start Kindy 3 months before being 6. if i was to send him to public school

so ... would i register him in fall 2011 when he would start school if i was to send him to public school (but will be 5 in Spet).... or wait till 2012 when he is already 6 at Sept 1??

how does that work?

My state law says that compusory education has to be from the 6th birthday. Is there a reason you cannot file in November when he turns 6?

i did not think of THAT -- hummmm -- I assumed you reported at the start of the school year or not till the end year.

BTW -- we might get to move to GA (I really hope to) if we do i will be picking your brain and others who live there about HS in that great state ...

Depends on your state laws..you need to find out the specifics. My state law specificies that compulsory attendace starts at the beginning of the school year for a child going to school, at AT the childs birthday for a homeschooler.

i have read the state laws several times (iowa). I didn't see a difference. I will post this to a local homeschool yahoo group and see what i find out.

not that it matters -- if we need to account for him in 2011 we will -- not a problem. i am just unsure about it

found it for you. Your state uses Sept 15 as the cutoff. The law says a child who is age 6 by September 15th is of compulsory age. Since your child will not be 6 prior to Sept 15, he will NOT be of compulsory age until the following year.

299.1A Compulsory attendance age.
A child who has reached the age of six and is under sixteen years of age by September 15 is of compulsory attendance age. However, if a child enrolled in a school district or accredited nonpublic school reaches the age of sixteen on or after September 15, the child remains of compulsory age until the end of the regular school calendar.

I filed our affidavit (in AZ) the week before DD's 6th birthday, so at the end of Sept. This although she was a 1st grader already (in our homeschool and in the PS-funded enrichment program). I would file just before or on your DS's birthday.
