Placenta question

Thread Starter
Just wanting to get an idea from people how long after you had the baby did the placenta come out?
I think I understand that it can be anywhere from a few minutes up until an hour, is this right?
Trying to get a frame of reference for the norm on this.
Thanks

The "norm" is about 20mins or less.

I have asked this before and have gotten like ...'matter of minutes - right after!' to about 'half an hour' - some (though very few) said 'hours! - 3 to 4 or more!'

Seems that the average is about half an hour though.

I am going to have Angelica on hand if it seems to be taking a long time.

Last time it was about 45 minutes, this time it took about 30.

It was pretty quick with ds1...methinks the doctor may have done something to help that along . With dd (uc) it took almost an hour. With ds2 (uc) I think it was like 45 minutes...it escapes me. But yeah, my second two taking that long makes me think my first would have taken as long if it was allowed to come naturally.

Mine took ten hours and then I still had membranes hanging out till 24hrs after the birth. I kept myself real clean and took angelica and vitamin C every few hours, it caused good cramps and I didn't get any kind of infection. I think it came down to me just not pushing right for the placenta though b/c it finally moved down into the birth canal when I blew my nose . The membranes were totally stuck, however, and I ended up pulling them out because I was really just wanting to be done having things come out of my vagina. I will totally try blowing my nose, blowing into a bottle, or coughing to get my placenta out next time. I have heard of women not birthing the placenta for several days though.

Many placentas come within 20 min. The great majority of them come by 1hr or so (including all those that come immediately or sometime during that first hour). A smaller number arrive up to 2hrs later--and a very small number of placentas take several hours to a day or more to come out. All of these scenarios *can be* normal for a mom.

As long as you are not bleeding much, you're feeling ok, your uterus is contracting and you can feel the top of your uterus is very firm and located at--or not far above--your navel, then you can wait it out.

I waited three hours, before I decided to go to the hospital (wanted to leave so I could get back to my baby) to have some tearing repaired and it was another hour before I could get it out with some pushing on my stomach from the doctor.

I had the downward pressure from directly after the birth. I tried squatting, peeing, pushing and nursing. When it did finally come out it was fully intact and healthy.

I gave myself a two-hour limit after our UC.(what Maggie Myles recommended)..as it turned out, my cervix closed up right after the birth, as I nursed him to prevent pph( I could feel it close up, durn!- it was a long labor and I was concerned about that possiblity) I did try some controlled traction(gently) in the shower, but it wouldn't come. that's when I decided to transport. We were gone about an hour, all told, and the placenta came out within 3 min of getting in the exam room...it was a HUGE placenta- biggest one I have seen to date. Then we turned around and came on home. The hospital wanted to keep the baby "for observation" and I said no- I know what a newborn is supposed to do and I would come back if needed. (this was 1989,and now you would probably get CPS on your hiney for doing that! But maybe not... )

I thought it was very quick...but TBH time is sketchy for me...had to be less than 15-20 minutes. The MW did traction, but I was okay w/ that b/c I had felt it separate. She was just helping the huge thing out. That felt almost as good as when DD slid out haha.

my placenta wasn't out after 2 hours and 45 min. went to the hospital for help. regret that decision. Didn't know that "in his hands" makes a tincture called "placenta out". will have that next time, if there is a next time. The doc at the hospital was really awful. He was pissed that he was only worth delivering the afterbirth. but none the less. wish that wouldn't have had to intrude on my bliss.
